New York, NY (January 26, 2015)– Junior Featherweight Rafael ‘Dynamite’ Vazquez is ranked sixth in the world by the World Boxing Association, holds the WBA Fedalatin Featherweight title, is dealing with an ill wife undergoing chemotherapy for cervical cancer, has an autistic daughter, and has been through three contracts to fight current WBA World Featherweight champion Scott Quigg of England which have fizzled out.

Vazquez still has a new chance to shine, and shine he will, in the main event of a 10 bout card at BB King Blues Club and Grill promoted by Lou DiBella Entertainment, on Thursday, January 29, 2015. Vazquez, 12-1, ten knockouts, a Puerto Rican fighting out of Howard Beach Brooklyn, will face veteran trial horse Joseph Rios, 13-11-2, four knockouts, a super flyweight moving up in weight from San Antonio, Texas. 13 of the opponents Rios has faced have a combined record of 77-0-2. Rios is a sure test for Vazquez, but may have less to offer moving up to the higher weight.

Vazquez is predicted to win by knockout or stoppage in five rounds or less in the scheduled eight rounder, which should not go the distance, given Vazquez has power and Rios does not. Rios might try to fight a survivor type bout, as he has only been stopped once in 26 contests in the past nine years. However, Vazquez is a closer still looking for a championship opportunity with Scott Quigg. For promoters Lou DiBella, and Kevin Sullivan and Felipe Gomez, the pursuit of the fraidy cat champion Quigg continues.

In the preliminary bout to the main event, rising super bantamweight prospect Luis ‘KO King’ Rosa, 17-0, seven knockouts, a Puerto Rican fighting out of New Haven, Connecticut, is favored to win by technical stoppage in five rounds or less over Puerto Rican southpaw Noel Echevarria, 11-4 with six knockouts, now fighting out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.Echevarria won his first 11 bouts, but only one of these opponents had a winning record. Since then, Echevarria has lost his last four bouts against quality opposition. Echevarria was stopped in four rounds at BB King against 27-1 Patrick Hyland last July.

Light heavyweight prospect Travis ‘Notorious’ Peterkin, 13-0, five knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, is favored by knockout in the first four rounds over Donta Woods, 8-3 with seven knockouts, Atlanta, Georgia. Woods won his first eight pro bouts, but has lost his last three against quality opposition, including getting disqualified in a bout in Tampa, Florida, last July, when his corner man entered the ring to save him from further punishment. Peterkin will either stop or knock out Woods. Woods’ last three opponents have a combined record of 39-0, it should be noted, and he probably will get knocked out trying.

In undercard bouts: undefeated southpaw middleweight prospect Chris Galeano of the Bronx is favored to win by six round decision over 8-5 Alexander Mancera of Queens, New York; unbeaten super middleweight prospect Steed ‘The Stallion’ Woodall, a British native fighting out of Miami, Florida, is favored to win by a hard fought six round decision over 5-5 Jas Phipps of Killeen, Texas. Phipps shocked 21-3-1 Juan De La Rosa of Mexico by first round knockout in his last bout in Texas to earn this opportunity.

Unbeaten Brooklyn lightweight prospect Wesley Ferrer is favored by six round decision over 2-4 Colorado journeyman Helario Medina, who has gone the distance in six previous bouts in Colorado. Southpaw super welterweight prospect Ivan Golub, a Ukrainian fighting out of Brooklyn, is favored to win by six round decision over 2-2 Rashawn McCain of Tucson, Arizona. 17-0-1 super middleweight Guyana prospect Lennox Allen, who has 10 knockouts, is favored to win by knockout over unknown 14-1 KojoIssah of Ghana, who holds the WBO Africa Middleweight title but has never fought outside of Ghana. The bout should prove interesting while it lasts.

Unbeaten super lightweight prospect Ivan ‘Beast’ Baranczyk of Belarus is favored to win by four round decision over 3-10-1 Ian James of Brooklyn. Unbeaten southpaw super welterweight prospect Shawn Cameron, 7-0, four knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, is favored to win by four round decision over New Mexico’s Daniel Calzada, 10-12-2 with two knockouts. Calzada has gone the distance 23 times in 24 pro bouts, including an eight round loss to contender Ashley Theophane last August in Las Vegas. Calzada does have more experience, and could prove to be a significant test and challenge for Cameron.
