Promoter Andre Acuna Interview: Harry Joe Yorgey Card is First Pro Boxing Event
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Promoter Andre Acuna hosted last year’s Pennsylvania Golden Gloves championships at Reverb Nightclub in Reading, Pennsylvania. Friday evening’s Wyomissing boxing card on July 25, 2014, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, a 10 bout Pro-Am boxing card, is his first professional show. In a Real Combat Media interview exclusive, Acuna talked about his new emergence as a professional promoter.
Real Combat Media: “Andre, what made you decide to do a professional show?”
Andre Acuna: “To bring out local talent. Eric Spring is 2-0, and the debut of Eli Mendez, who works hard every day, and the opportunity to work with other professionals who have been in the gym for awhile like Harry Joe Yorgey and Rolando Chinea.”
Real Combat Media: “Why the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Wyomissing to do your first show?”
Andre Acuna: “It’s a beautiful venue in a nice safe neighborhood. It’s a great ballroom. It’s a nice spot for an after party, and the hotel has beautiful rooms to accommodate our out of town fans!”
Real Combat Media: “There are 750 ticket seats in the Designer Ballroom for your 10 bout amateur and professional card. How have sales been going?”
Andre Acuna: “We’ll know tonight after the press conference at the Crowne Plaza.”
Real Combat Media: “What are your future plans? To do more professional shows?”
Andre Acuna: “To do more professional shows, and continue to build up young talent. We have a young boxer who is 34-4 as an amateur, Xavaian Ramirez, who we are taking to the ringside amateur national tournament next week in Kansas City.”
Real Combat media: “Will your next boxing show this year be at the Crowne Plaza again?”
Andre Acuna: “We’ll probably do our next boxing show again at the Crowne Plaza, and we’re looking at the dates in the Fall now.”
Real Combat Media: “Have any other big names contacted you to sign with your promotional group and appear on our shows?”
Andre Acuna: “Absolutely. We’ve got a lot of calls. We want to work with boxers who have a true desire and passion for the sport and want to excel and work hard. We (also) have three prospects we’re looking to turn pro before the end of 2014.”
