Cruiserweight Lamont ‘ Too Smooth’ Capers Interview: Minor Upset of the Year in New York City

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

In a Real Combat Media exclusive interview, cruiserweight Lamont ‘Too Smooth’ Capers discussed his win over undefeated Dave Valykeo by four round majority decision at Pac Plex in New York City on May 17, 2014. The win by Capers was the minor upset of the year thus far in New York City. Capers, 4-3, Hawley, Pennsylvania, upset the 4-0 Valykeo with scores of 39-37, 39-37, and 38-38. Capers will next appear in a four rounder at Rosecroft Raceway, in Fort Washington, Maryland. His record includes a four round decision loss to Khalib ‘Bigfoot’ Whitmore, a Nazim Richardson trained fighter. Capers has gone the four round distance in all seven of the four round bouts he has appeared in since he turned professional with a decision win over Tim Hopkins in Dickson City, Pennsylvania in December 2012.

Real Combat Media: “Lamont, did you think you would win a decision over Valykeo on your opponent’s home territory?”

Too Smooth: “No. He was a 4-0 guy. I thought he was going to get the majority decision.”

Real Combat Media: “Press had it for you 40-36 at ringside. You weren’t seeing much offense.”

Too Smooth: “Not at all. He was not really doing anything to me, so I could go all out.”

Real Combat Media: Valykeo was a much shorter guy. Did you see an advantage in that?”

Too Smooth: “He was short. That means he has power. I just had to keep him away. He did a good job hitting me with a few power shots.”

Real Combat Media: “Are you going to fight at light heavyweight or cruiserweight in the future?”

Too Smooth: “I fight both ways (in both divisions), cruiserweight to light heavyweight. I want to (prefer to) fight at light heavyweight, where I am faster and stronger.”

Real Combat Media: “Are you happy you won?”

Too Smooth: “You better believe it. The guy I beat, Dave Valykeo, the promoter’s fighter, is from New Jersey. I was born in Brooklyn (so really I should have been considered the hometown fighter), and I reside in the Poconos. The Poconos is a nice place to live and train, with no distractions, where I can do what I have to do (to get ready for a fight). I was really shocked (the judges gave me the decision which I deserved).”

Real Combat Media: “How do you feel about your performance?”

Too Smooth: “I did a good job. The (hometown) crowd booed me. It didn’t phase me. A lot of people say they always give the decision to the promoter’s hometown fighter. Thankfully I was treated fairly in New York. I do my job.”
