Washington versus Scott: Worst Refereed Fight of the Month of April 2014
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
New York, NY (April 8th, 2014)– Attention professional boxing referees. Here’s a great video of how NOT to referee a professional bout, one of the worst and most flagrant examples of a referee blowing an obvious call. Heavyweight Skipp Scott had one knee of the canvas, and was clearly down to be counted. His opponent, Gerald Washington, then stepped forward and hit Scott with a body shot while he was down. Referee Lou Moret, ignoring the fact Scott was already on the canvas, ignored Scott getting hit while he was down, and proceeded to unfairly count Scott out and declare Gerald Washington, now 12-0, nine knockouts, Vallejo, California, the winner. Scott falls to 16-2, ten knockouts, Houston, Texas.
The bout result of the fight which took place on April 3, 2014, at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, is currently under appeal with the California State Athletic Commission. Much like Bernard Hopkins versus Chad Dawson I, we have not yet seen the final result of the bout between Washington versus Scott. Washington should be, ad may still be, disqualified in his bout against Scott, at the next meeting of the commission. For now, the stinky result of Washington versus Scott stands. The foul being dead obvious for all who could see, a ruling of an accidental punch thrown simply won’t cut the mustard on appeal.
