Escalante registers first round kayo over Trejo-a full fight report

By Nick Bellafatto, RCM Boxing Correspondent – Ringside

Redwood City, CA (March 1st, 2014)– Newly crowned IBA junior bantamweight champion Bruno Escalante (12-1-1, 6 KO’s) fighting out of Belmont, CA wouldn’t waste much time, taking out his most experienced opponent to date in Sonora, Mexico’s Lorenzo Trejo (33-29-1, 20 KO’s) with a body-shot right-hook combination in the very first round. This on a card promoted by Don Chargin and Paco Presents.   Stated a jubilant Escalante, “I wasn’t looking for the knockout but it came. We’ve been working on that combination in the gym and it paid off.” Landing straight down the pipe to loosen up the veteran Trejo before a packed house at the Fox Theater in Redwood City, California, southpaw Escalante during the brief encounter would with solid left hands to the body and head keep the Mexican off balance to eventually set up the coup de grace.

Co-Main Event

San Francisco, CA’s Jonathan Chicas (13-1, 6 KO’s) after registering a huge knockout in his previous fight would do the very same against vastly more experienced Rogelio Castaneda Jr. (26-20-3, 8 KO’s) of nearby Sacramento. Clearly the harder puncher, Jonathan would in both rounds 2 and 3 drop Castaneda with right hands. Able to beat the count each time, Rogelio wouldn’t survive a monster left hook that connected flush at the 0:54 mark of round 4.

Undercard Bouts

Laying opponents out with regularity, this night would end differently for San Francisco, CA middleweight Ricardo Pinell (7-1-1, 5 KO’s), who putting in a full six rounds would emerge a unanimous decision winner over Meza, AZ counterpart Saul Benitez (2-5-1). By scores of 59-55 and 58-56 twice, Ricardo would rock his opponent more than once, landing the visibly more appealing shots in the face of a steady working yet less accurate Benitez.

Cruiserweights were next up, with San Jose, CA’s undefeated Tony Johnson (8-0, 2 KO’s) remaining so after stopping game but overmatched and near winless Sacramento opponent Harry Gopaul (1-7, 1 KO). In control throughout, Johnson would land an incapacitating temple shot to then with a follow up barrage render defenseless Gopaul. This would prompt the referee to call a halt with the end coming at 26 seconds of third round.

Hometown lightweight fighter Jesus Sandoval wouldn’t fare well at all, running smack dab into violent counter uppercut launched by Phoenix, AZ’s Cesear Valenzuela to go down in a heap. The time, 1:02 of the very first round so that Valenzuela without breaking a sweat moves to 5-3-1 with 2 knockouts while Sandoval drops to 3-2-3.

Jr. middleweight Mauricio Zavaleta (1-1, 1 KO) of San Leandro, CA would as the shorter opponent need to make it a war with rangier Sacramento opponent Darren Millard (2-0) of which he did in the fourth and final round. But not always getting the best of it in round 4, neither would Zavaleta in the previous three so that Mallard would exit the ring a split decision winner by scores of 40-36 and 39-37 to Zavaleta’s 39-37.

Four rounds in the heavyweight division would see the pro debut of two men, San Leandro, California’s Andrew Tinae taking on nearby Antioch opponent Xavier Vigney. Rock steady behind the jab, a much taller Vigney would catch the crouching Tinae with a thudding uppercut to put Andrew out on his feet. Enter referee Brent Venegas, who after assessing the situation would call a end to matters. The time, 1:56 of the very first round.
