Former International Boxing Organization World Cruiserweight champion Ezra Sellers, who defeated Carl Thompson to win the IBO world title, has passed away due to heart failure in his native Pensacola, Florida at the age of 45.

“I was sorry to hear about it,” noted Chicago boxing trainer Joseph Awinongya of Ghana. Awinongya, a former cruiserweight contender himself, lost a close eight round decision to Sellers at the Seminole Casino in Coconut Creek, Florida in June 2003, the last decision win earned by Sellers.

A hard puncher, Sellers compiled a career record of 29 wins and eight losses with 26 knockouts, a 74% knockout ratio. Sellers won the IBO title with a fourth round slugfest knockout of Carl Thompson in November 2001 in Manchester, United Kingdom, Sellers going down twice and Sellers going down four times in the end. Sellers was knocked out by Johnny Nelson in the eighth round of hid first title defense by Johnny Nelson in Copenhagen, Denmark. Other noteworthy Sellers opponents included Alex Stewart, Kelvin Davis and O’Neil Bell. Sellers also won several bouts at heavyweight, including against such names as Danny Wofford, Marion Wilson and John McClain.
