By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
New York, NY (November 29th, 2013)–Southpaw Boyd ‘Rainmaker’ Melson is back on the move. In his first bout in four months, Melson, 32, 12-1, four knockouts, White Plains, New York, will face middleweight journeyman Gundrick King, 18-10, 11 knockouts, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in an eight round step up light middleweight bout. The bout will be a dangerous test for Melson. King, coming off a decision loss to former light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman, has fought as high as light heavyweight in the past 18 months, weighing 174 pounds when he decisioned Billy Cunningham in June 2012. Three of King’s more recent opponents-George Tahdooahnippah, Mikael Zewski, Jonathan Gonzalez, Brad Solomon, Benjamin Besmi, and Oscar Rojillo-had a combined record of 62-0-1 when King fought them. Melson, who donates his winnings from prize fighting to spinal cord research, is favored to win this tough bout by eight round decision.
Melson’s bout will be the preliminary bout to the main event to an 11 bout card promoted by DiBella Entertainment at BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York City on Wednesday evening, December 4, 2013. Rising Puerto Rican super bantamweight prospect Luis Angel Rosa, 14-0, six knockouts, New Haven, Connecticut, will face dangerous southpaw trial horse Andre Wilson, 13-6-1, 11 knockouts, Saint Joseph, Missouri. Five of Wilson’s most recent opponents-Luis Del Valle, Eric Hunter, Leonilo Miranda, Chris Avalos, and Teon Kennedy-had a combined record of 81-4 when Wilson fought them. Wilson holds recent knockouts over Ryan Pederson and Levi Martin. His record includes a second round knockout over the late Francisco Rodriguez, and a ten round decision win over Alex Baba to win the USBC Bantamweight title. Rosa has shown solid power punching technique and is favored to win by stoppage in the middle rounds-if the toe-to-toe bout goes that far.
Six round scheduled bouts on the card include: 10-0 Canadian super middleweight prospect FrancyNtetu, originally from The Congo, against Julio Garcia; 7-0 featherweight prospect Bryant Cruz of Port Chester, New York, against Joshua Arocho; 9-0 southpaw light heavyweight prospect Travis ‘Notorious’ Peterkin against Tylon Burris; 10-0 middleweight Antoine Douglas of Burke, Virginia, face Colby Colbert; 22-3 southpaw middleweight contender Craig McEwan of Edinburgh, Scotland, and 5-0 super middleweight 2012 National Golden Gloves champion Jerry Odom of Bowie, Maryland, are also scheduled to appear in separate bouts.
