UFC FIGHT NIGHT 30 MACHIDA VS. MUNOZ RESULTS

UFC Fight Night 30:  Truly a Mixed Martial Arts Event

By Richard Crenwelge, RCM MMA Correspondent

Manchester, UK (October 28th, 2013)–Fight Night 30 had a little bit of everything; there were KOs, TKOs, submissions, and decisions, in addition to a controversial doctor stoppage.  This was a rather well-rounded event in an age where the sport is becoming more and more homogenous, and MMA is becoming a style unto itself.

The prelims featured some excellent showmanship, with Cole Miller (19-8 MMA) edging out Andy Ogle (9-2 MMA) in a decision win that was perhaps of a controversial nature.  Ogle threw far more total strikes, landing a whopping 82%, and completed two takedowns, while Miller displayed excellent back mount on the ground.  Ogle’s fellow Englishman Luke Barnatt (6-0 MMA), however, left nothing to be discussed, as he toppled Andrew Craig (9-1 MMA) with a long right hand and short hook at the end of the first, and then submitted him via RNC after another fantastic punch combination early in the second.  Former TUF contestant Al Iaquinta (6-2-1 MMA) rounded out the prelims with a pretty solid decision win over Polish fighter Piotr Hallmann (14-1 MMA).

Nicholas Musoke (10-2-1 MMA) pulled off quite the upset against hard-hitting veteran Alessio Sakara (15-10 MMA), although, to be fair, Sakara has had a rough go-of-it in the UFC for quite some time now.  After weathering some heavy leather, Musoke hit a belly-down armbar at about 3:00 into the third.

Two bouts later, Ryan Jimmo (18-2 MMA) succumbed to a freak leg injury in the second round against Jimi Manuwa (13-0 MMA).  He was retreating after taking a knee from Manuwa, and then suddenly yelled out, falling to the canvas.  Doctors have since offered the message “looks ok” on Twitter, but the exact nature of the injury remains a mystery.  The Pearson (15-6 MMA) v Guillard (13-12-2 MMA) bout had what seemed (at first) to be an equally bizarre ending, after the referee stopped the fight following an illegal knee from Guillard to the downed Pearson.  There was a nominal amount of blood dripping from a cut in Pearson’s forehead, but nothing out-of-the-ordinary.  Doctors stopped the fight, however, and a post-fight camera angle showed a large, jagged cut, which probably indicates that the decision to end the fight was warranted.

Machida (19-4 MMA) and Munoz (13-3 MMA), of course, headlined the card, and the fight certainly did not disappoint.  As many predicted, though, Munoz simply did not have the skillset to defeat Machida.  Additionally, Machida looked to be in incredible shape at 185, with a physique befitting a high, high-level athlete of any sport.  Ultimately, Machida never came within the proper range for Munoz to shoot, and Munoz was not able to find his striking range, either.  In typical fashion, Machida never stayed in one location long enough to allow his opponent to gauge distance whatsoever.  The fight ended with a head kick KO from Machida over Munoz’ high guard.  Machida threw a few body kicks to Munoz’ right side, causing Munoz to leave his right hand well below the chin.  The subsequent head kick, however, was aimed at the crown of Munoz’ head, so although he blocked his chin and temple, the shin still made solid contact against the skull.
