Lamar Russ, The Boxing Que, Passes The Test
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
2009 National Golden Gloves 165 pounds finalist Lamar Russ AKA ‘The Boxing Que’ has passed the ultimate middleweight test. Dangerous Latif Mundy mugged and taunted for eight disgusting rounds, hoping to get Russ to blow his cool and punch himself out. Russ, who enjoyed considerable height and reach advantage over Mundy, boxed carefully and patiently in center ring, avoiding getting suckered in along the ropes.
After eight rounds of boxing through Mundy’s disgusting showboat clowning, Russ wona unanimous eight round decision on the undercard of a seven bout card promoted by DiBella Entertainment and SMS Promotions at Resorts New World Casino Aqueduct Raceway on Saturday, September 16, 2013. The bout was an interesting affair, as Mundy butted, held, ran, and threw an occasional chance or two in center ring but never followed up. It was as if Mundy simply expected Russ would fold, get wild, and punch himself out. It never happened, and Mundy, who knows how to fight but did not, wound up looking like a fool as his strange game plan stunk out the house.
Russ using precise pinpoint jabs to outwork Mundy, who lacked both offense and an answer, and stuck to his stinky game plan of disrespect and apparently greatly underestimated both his opponent’s abilities and intelligence. Mundy could have floored the gas pedal in the last three rounds, but knew his foe has sufficient skills to take him out if he got careless, so Mundy didn’t try, conceding the bout. Mundy can fight but could not overcome Russ’ height and reach advantages. Russ is 6’1”. Mundy is 5’8”. End of story.
Russ, now 14-0, seven knockouts, Wilmington, North Carolina, is now ranked number 50 in the world among middleweights for promoter Lou DiBella and DiBella Entertainment. Mundy, a deceiving 10-8, four knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who opened his career with eight wins, has now lost six consecutive decisions to fighters with a combined record of 67-3-1.
Russ is improving but still needs more work, and could still use several more eight round bouts before he steps up in class to the ten round level, and pursues a regional belt for a world ranking. As always, Lou DiBella moves his prospects at a good pace. Give Russ three years, and DiBella could have the next top ranked middleweight. Seregio Gabriel Martinez is getting older, and when his career ends, DiBella will have another world ranked middleweight in the wings. More power hitting work and quality sparring would greatly improve Russ’ cause. The crowd would have loved to see Russ knock Mundy out, but like Bernard Hopkins versus Kelly Pavlik, when the win is in the bank, there’s no need to take unnecessary chances.
Result: Lamar Russ Win 8 Latif Mundy, Super Middleweights
Scoring: 79-73, 79-73, 77-75 for Lamar Russ.
