50 Cent Presence Steals The Boxing Show at Resorts New World Casino Aqueduct
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent- Ringside
New York, NY (September 18th, 2013)–There were seven fights on the card at Resorts New World Casino Aqueduct Raceway on Monday evening, September 16, 2013. Fourteen fighters were showcased, but in the end, the true star of the DiBella Promotions and SMS Promotions event was none other than Curtis James Jackson III AKA American rapper 50 Cent. Three of the fighters belonged to 50 Cent, but the event was his to own. How far the magical 50 Cent can go to as a sports promoter is not known, but his conviction to help young boxers to achieve their dreams is admirable. All three of his boxers did not win, as Curtis Jackson III sat a ringside watching astutely as just an ordinary man on a new extraordinary voyage.
The event took an unusual turn as one hour was lost when a courageous fighter, 2-5 Calvin Smith of Prichard, Alabama, who went the distance and lost in a four round bout against unbeaten junior welterweight 50 Cent prospect Shemuel Pagan of Brooklyn, New York, phenomenal odds had to go to the hospital with a mild concussion, and the absence of the Emergency Medical Technicians gave rise to an impromptu unscheduled rap concert enjoyed by all, who crowded ringside to the rap music until the EMT personnel returned and the boxing show resumed. Smith went down twice, took a huge beating, but had a heart of gold and still tried to win though he lost badly on the cards.
In the main event, lightweight prospect Mark ‘Too Sharp’ Davis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. went to 18-0, five knockouts, with an unimpressive ten round decision over 10-11 trial horse Carlos Vinan. It appeared Vinan earned a draw, scored 98-98 by Real Combat Media. The score cards went 99-91, 98-82, 97-93 for Davis. However, the bout was a lot closer than the hometown decision. Davis opened the bout with effective body combinations, but could not shake Vinan. Who stalked his with counter jabs and power shots and simply would not go away. Davis would up on a ten round trip to hell, with the Ecuadorian Vinan remaining strongly in the house for all ten rounds. Davis did however win the final round of the close bout with combinations on the inside and was a bit busier, with Vinan throwing inside counters and hitting behind the head dirty.
14-0 middleweight prospect Lamar ‘The Boxing Que’ Russ of Wilmington, North Carolina won an eight round decision over middleweight journeyman Latif Mundy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, now 10-8. Mundy used one good head butt and eight nonsensical rounds of clowning around in an attempt to make Russ get emotional like an amateur and charge him on the ropes. Russ, however, had too much ring smarts, and did not fall for the blatant eight round trap. The cards read 79-73, 79-73, 78-74 for Russ, but it sure looked like Mundy did not win a round. Mundy landed a few powerful inside combinations and looked like he had the potential to perhaps take Russ out, but he was too cowardly to fight like a man. Mundy opted instead to act like he could box, but mostly ran like the cowardly lion. Russ, contend to land his well-placed jabs and not punch himself, ended up making Mundy look like a showboating fool.
In a miracle upset after the EMT delay, short but powerful David Rohn of Chcago, Illinois, went to 2-0 and spoiled the debut of 50 Cent fighter Christopher Galeano of Bronx, New York. Rohn scored a flash knockout of Galeano at the start of the first, and dropped Galeano again in the fourth, to pull the upset. Galeano is a far better boxer, but Rohn discovered Galeano has no chin, found the weakness at the start, and focused to find it again before the final bell. The judges deservedly gave it to him with 38-36, 38-37, 38-37.
