Boston, MA(August 18, 2013)– It was a great night of fights in Boston. From the main event to the under card.. Full of action and moments to remember. The crowed was electric all night long cheering for hometown hero’s or just their favorite fighters.
So lets get into the winners. Manny Gamburyan, Diego Brandao, and Michael Johnson all won by unanimous decision. While John Howard beat Uriah Hall by split decision, Matt Brown, Steven Siler, Ovince St. Preux all won by KO and James Vick and Michael McDonald won by submission.
Urijah Faber Vs Yuri Alcantara
The fight opened with an aggressive Faber attack on Alcantara. Faber almost paid dearly for that aggression. A very game Alcantara reversed Faber, took him down and had him mounted within the first twenty seconds. After quite a few scary moments for the “California Kid,” things turned around. Faber controlled the remaining two and a half rounds with superior wrestling and a good number of elbows.
The overall domination earned Urijah Faber the unanimous decision victory. Faber’s three fight win streak could once again put a title shot in his future.
Travis Browne KOs Alistair Overeem
The Alistair Overeem freight train has been stopped–again.
The co-main event of the evening found “The Reem” in complete control early. It appeared referee Mario Yamasaki considered stopping the fight a couple times as the powerful Overeem landed numerous shots to the side of the face of a turtled Browne. Browne survived the barrage and made his way back to his feet. He noticed Overeem was fading a bit, picked his spot and let a front kick fly. That large Browne foot landed square on the chin and sent Overeem to the floor where he was finished with a couple heavy hammer fists.
This victory moves Browne up the ladder where another win over a top five contender could have him seeing gold.
The Grand Finale
It was a fight to show the world if Chael Sonnen was still relevant as a competitor or if Mauricio Rua would continue to climb towards title contention. As it turns out, Sonnen still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Sonnen controlled the early going with his wrestling and positional skills. After grinding on Rua with little damage and with less than 15 seconds left in the first round, Chael Sonnen finished former UFC champion Shogun Rua with a guillotine choke. The impressive win got the enthused Boston crowd on their feet one last time for the action packed evening.
Sonnen the entertainer gave a sneak peak at what his future may hold. In his post fight interview with Joe Rogan he let go with a bit of poetry before announcing an interesting perspective on MMA legend Wanderlei Silva. Sonnen declared that Silva was “six feet tall and 205 pounds. Boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high.” Sonnen went on to say he wanted to fight the “Axe Murder” in three months.
