Can Kermit Cintron Return to Championship Form?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Welterweight Kermit ‘El Asesino’ Cintron has only five wins in his last 11 fights. At age 33, with a record of 34-5-2 with 28 knockouts, Cintron is at a crossroads turning point in his career. Cintron has beaten Lovemore N’dou and Alfredo Angulo, has drawn with Sergio Gabriel Martinez, and has lost to Antonio Margarito (twice), Paul Williams, Carlos Molina, Paul Williams and Saul Alvarez.

Cintron turned pro in October 2000 with a second round stoppage of Jesse Williams in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He won his first 24 bouts until Margarito stopped him. Cintron won the North American Boxing Federation, and International Boxing Federation World Welterweight titles. Cintron defeated Mark Suarez, Walter Dario Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano in title bouts. Cintron knocked Merit out with a body shot in their rematch to win the IBF title. Kermit drew with Sergio Gabriel Martinez in a WBC World title eliminator at 154 pounds light middleweight.

With an ugly win over Jonathan Batista by ten round decision at welterweight on August 2, 2013, in Oklahoma, Cintron is back in contention. The best idea on the table is for Cintron to fight Jesus Soto Karass for the NABF title Karass won by defeating Andre Berto, with the Cintron-Karass winner to fight either Floyd Mayweather or the winner of Timothy Bradley versus Juan Manuel Marquez. Cintron has always fought a high quality of opponent. For those fighting at 147 and 154 pounds, competition will remain fierce. Probably for Kermit Cintron in 2013 and 2014, the higher the level of opponent, the better.
