Amanda Serrano Stops Olivo in Three, World Title Shot Next?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (June 30th, 2013)–Southpaw female featherweight and super featherweight Amanda Serrano moved closer to her second world title shot at either 126 or 130 pounds, perhaps against WBC World Champion Diana Prazak, with a third round stoppage of Dominga Olivo in the main event at Resorts New World Casino Aqueduct Raceway, Queens, New York, on Saturday, June 29, 2013.

Serrano, now 18-2, 12 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, ranked number four in the world as a featherweight on BoxRec and having trouble finding opponents due to her fearsome reputation,, fought an even first round with onetime contender Olivo, a former female national amateur champion, now 8-8-1, no knockouts, Brooklyn, New York. However, Serrano is 24 years old, and Olivo is 41 years old. Olivo, after two years inactivity, showed good legs in the first round, but thereafter faded. Olivo went down into the ropes near the end of round two, not called a knockdown but the end appeared near. In rounds two and three, Serrano cut off the ring and trapped Olivo along the ropes repeatedly and forced her into heated toe-to-toe exchanges. Olivo took wicked punishment as Serrano threw body shots followed by head shots which broke down Olivo’s defenses.

While the stoppage appeared somewhat premature, in the end Olivo could not exchange evenly with Serrano when trapped, forcing Olivo to take a brutal number of head shots while countering hard but unable to match Serrano on the punch count. The ringside doctor waved his hands at ringside to call of the lopsided affair in the third round, which was eventually picked up by referee Sammy Viruet, who stopped the contest with Olivo unable to escape from a violent exchange along the ropes and taking an unstoppable number of power head shots landing accurately and savagely. Nobody in the house wanted to see the end of the encounter.

Olivo weighed in at 132 pounds the day before the bout, two pounds over the 130 pound lightweight limit, and took a financial penalty

Serrano stated after the bout she was just hoping to get at least two rounds in, and she was open to any world title opportunity now, “Whatever comes my way”. A representative for the rapper and boxing promoter 50 Cent, Troy Casey, scouted Serrano’s bout with Serrano’s manager Michael Wright at ringside in consideration of possible promotional sponsorship for a future world title bout.

In an exclusive interview with Real Combat Media after Serrano won, Casey stated “We (50 Cent) are interested in Amanda Serrano. She’s exciting! Right now 50 Cent has a July 5  ‘ESPN2 Friday Night Fights’ event at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford featuring our fighters Billy Dib and Dante Strayhorn.”

Result: Amanda Serrano TKO 3 Dominga Olivo (1:18)

Referee: Samuel Viruet (two minute rounds)

In the preliminary to the main event, 6-0 southpaw middleweight Shawn Cameron won by second round technical stoppage when opponent Dominique Foster of Ohio somehow twisted his right ankle, and was unable to answer the bell for round three.

Scheduled undercard bouts featuring Rafael Vasquez and Joe Smith Jr. were scratched from the card. Vasquez will face Leon Moore of Guyana in a main event bout at Resorts in September 2013.

Other Undercard Bouts at Resorts Casino Aqueduct Raceway, Queens, New York

Referees: Ron Lipton, Pete Santiago, Samuel Viruet

Marcus Beckford Win 4 Gustavo Medina, Light Middleweights

Gary Beriguette (Pro Debut) Win TKO 2 Carlos Nieves, Light Middleweights

Patrick Day Win 4 Carl Hill, Light Middleweights (Day was an Olympic alternate)

Jay Rodriguez TKO 4 Ken Rosser, Cruiserweights (2:06) Rosser down twice in 4th.

Bryant Cruz TKO 1 Tom Archamboult, Super Featherweights (2:22)

Ryan Ramayyya Majority Draw 4 Angel Siguenza (Pro Debut), Junior Lightweights

Bad decision in this bout. The Mexican Siguenza clearly won the first three rounds on come forward aggression and punch volume, Ramayya not showing much of an offense. However, Ramayya clearly won the fourth round with accurate jabs, not letting Siguenza get inside.  The Mexican Siguenza, fighting out of Queens, New York, clearly had a strong amateur background in Mexico before coming to the United   States. It was clear by his performance he had extensive ring experience.

Real; Combat Media scored the bout 39-36 for Siguenza. Ramayya is now 1-0-2.
