By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent

Atlantic City, N.J. (May 16, 2013)– Lamont Peterson of Memphis, Tennessee, BoxRec number one light welterweight, will settle the score once and for all to determine who is the best light welterweight in the world when he fights BoxRec number three light welterweight Lucas Martin Matthysse of Buenos Aires, Argentina, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Saturday May 18, 2013, for the right to fight Danny Garcia, BoxRec’s number two fighter. Devon Alexander will defend his IBF World Welterweight title against challenger Lee Purdy in the 12 round main event on the eleven bout card, which is part of the Golden Boy boxing series.

The bout will be fought at 141 pounds, so no belts will be at stake in the 12 rounder.

The fight analysis begins with a statement of fact. Luzas Matthyse has been robbed of split decisions against Devon Alexander anb Zab Judah. In both cases, Matthysse had his opponent down but was unable to close the show. His older brother, Walter Dario Matthysse, went to 25-0, but lost his last five step up fights, including to Alex Bunema, Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams. Matthysse has a great deal to prove, but to win in the United states, Matthysse will have to knock Peterson out.

Matthysse is well prepared and hits hard. His first round knockout of Mike Dallas Jr. on Showtime proved both cases. Peterson, who was decisioned by the light hitting Timothy Bradley, had better be prepared and had better watch out. Matthysse can take Peterson deep too, like he did stopping 30-0 Ajose Olusegun in the tenth round in Las Vegas in September 2012.

Peterson struggled to win a split decision in 12 rounds over Amir Khan, a fighter knocked out by Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia. Peterson was knocked down twice is his ten round draw with Victor Ortiz. If Matthysse can fight the right game plan, his ability to throw punches in bunches, get inside, while moving forward with pressure and cutting off the ring might rattle Peterson’s cage, as Peterson expects to win a technical fight with reach advantage from the outside. Peterson expects Matthysse will be unable to get inside, enabling him to win rounds.

Peterson was able to stop Kendall Holt in right rounds, Damian Fuller in seven rounds, and 20-0 Willy Blain in seven rounds, by doing just that. In two of Peterson’s best technical fights, he used a consistent jab from the outside to win ten round decisions over Lanardo Tyner and 34-0 Antonio Mesquita. Peterson’s defensive ability to block punches is solid, and is his ability to land pinpoint punches through his opponent’s defenses.

Peterson was down against Amir Khan, and later failed the post fight drug tests for steroids. Peterson needs to be in top form and absolutely clean from doping for this affair, less his reputation be ruined for good this time round.

To win, Matthysse will have to get inside and land heavy shots upstairs and to the body, notably with a lot of right hand leads and right hand counters, and break Peterson down. Peterson by 12 round decision or Matthysse by knockout. Whichever fight wants it a little be more is going to win this bout and an opportunity fight with Danny Garcia, with the winner of that bout to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. It all makes sense with the road leading to Floyd. Odds give Peterson the edge but who knows, anything goes here. Whichever man wants to win a little bit more is going take this bout one way or the other. Whichever fighter is hungrier may take more chances, which makes this bout an interesting match.

Matthysse make his last bout exciting when he knocked out late substitute Mike Dallas Jr., his knockout percentage is high and he’s desperate for a world title.  I like Peterson better to win this bout because he wants to win badly. If Matthysse wins, the purse for a bout would Danny Garcia would drop considerably, and it probably is a bout possibility which would never happen. The public wants Peterson, not Matthysse. Goes the song by the England Dan and John Ford Coley, ‘Some Things Don’t Come Easy’.
