Kind Words For Don Dunphy and Microphone Magic
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
Don Dunphy was, is and will always be one of professional boxing’s great commentators. For over 40 years, from Joe Louis to Muhammad Ali, Dunphy’s voice into the microphone was magic. Don was boxing’s international spokesperson, a role model for all ages and seasons. Don’s style was timeless, his diction divine.
Don’s name is rarely mentioned in boxing circles anymore, how quickly the Don Dunphys, the Nat Fleischers, the Howard Cosells, and the Hank Kaplans are forgotten, like Joe Gans, Battling Siki and Gentleman Jim Corbett, just forgotten names in the wind.
However, Don Dunphy lives on in memory, through the magic of YouTube, where you will often find his voice calling the action in old fight films now posted onto the worldwide web into the public domain.
Don Dunphy, in a sense, was boxing’s greatest straight man. Simply put, Don called the fights he saw in raw black and white, but he painted his portrait of the bouts he called in descriptive colors. Perhaps Don called boxing better than anybody ever to talk into a sports microphone. Don’s brilliance came from calling bouts with a sparkling neutrality rather than partiality in favor of one fighter or promoter or both.
Don has been gone since 1998, when he passed at age 90. I was just thinking of Don, and remembered him because he called fights so great. Even after all the time since Don has passed, whenever I watch a classic fight called by Don, his boxing commentary still sparkles with a certain magic. One can listen and glisten details about the goings on in the ring at a high level, then understand elements of the fight game at a much higher plane. Now, through, the magic of YouTube, Don Dunphy remains one of the top commentators in boxing.
