A Breakdown of Lucas Matthysse’s Future
Brooklyn, NY (May 22, 2013)– Lucas Matthysse (34(32)-2-0) has sent a shock wave through the Welterweight division of boxing. His 3 round destruction of Lamont Peterson (31(16)-2-1) brings and interesting new variable to an already stacked class. In my opinion, Lucas Matthysse is an undefeated fighter. His 2 defeats have come via split decision against Devon Alexander and Zab Judah. He put both opponents down to the canvas in each of those fights, and in my humbled opinion, did enough to earn victories in both outings. Since then, he has gone on a tear destroying opponents en route to gaining the interim WBC Light Welterweight title.
Matthysse now has a very impressive resume, and is a solid sell for a big name fight. Danny Garcia seems to be the next man in his path and to me, will not be the man to de rail “The Machine”. The ring generalship as well as power Matthysse possess both hands makes him the scariest fighter at 140 pounds today. Garcia will not have what it takes to stand up to the Argentinean freak. Garcia is an aggressive fighter who does not mind trading with his opponents. I enjoy Garcia as a fan, and he earned my respect with impressive wins over Nate Cambell, Kendall Holt, Erik Morales, Amir Khan and most recently his tough unanimous deciscion victory in Zab Judah’s home tome. As tough and as talented he is as a fight, I feel he lacks the head movement and defense of a super elite fighter. I say this taking nothing away from Danny Garcia, and posses the boxing skill to beat Lucas Matthysse. In order for him to do this, he cannot find himself caught in dogfight exchanges as he did with Judah and Khan, he will not have the same vicorious outcome as he did in those two outings. Mathysse does no have the glass chin of a khan, and has dynamite in his gloves compared to Judah. If you are relying on the strength of your chin when getting in the ring with an animal such as Lucas Matthysse, you are outright delusional. Garcia has yet to hit the canvas in his career and has proven to the boxing community that he can take a punch, but he has yet to fight an animal such as Mathysse.
Matthysse has the potential to be the fighter to clean out the division. Amir Khan, who is a potential opponent to Floyd Mayweather, has the speed to frustrate Matthysse, but as mentioned above, has a chin made of glass and would not be able to withstand the power of The Machine. His other two opponents at this class are signed to Bob Arum, and I will speak later on why these fights are not possible.
A move up to 147 seems inevitable which makes for bigger pay days, exciting fights, as well as a shift in the sport of boxing. Juan Manuel Marquez is too old and Pacquiao has too much to lose by taking a fight with a power puncher. This leaves Devon Alexander, Andre Berto, Ruslan Provodnikov, Timothy Bradley and division ace Floyd Mayweather. Provodnikov after his showing with Bradley would probably be with most likely matchup and very entertain as well. Provodnikov is as tough as they come and has the skill and power to truly test The Machine. Fights with men such as Provodnikov, Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado and Timothy Bradley could make Mathysse into a legend of this sport. As we all know, styles make fights, and you need an opponent who has a chin to speed to make Matthysee work. The above list brings us back to the argument of why we need a governing body in the sport of boxing. The war between Top Rank/HBO and Golden Boy/Showtime takes amazing fights away from us once again. Maybe we could see a shift in Matthysee’s contract or pray for a change of heart with the big name promoters in the boxing community. Since both of those situations seem highly unlikely, we must look forward to a Danny Garcia – Lucas Matthysee matchup. This will make for a good fight, but as mentioned before, I truly feel that Matthysee will get to Garcia with his power and set up a potential match up with the living legend, Floyd Mayweather. With this, there will not be many weight classes Floyd can avoid, and he would have to fight Matthysee, Broner, Canelo or move up and take a piece of the most un-spoken about dominant champion in the sport, Andre ‘SOG” Ward.
