26-0 Cedric Agnew Wins USBA Light Heavyweight Title, Eyes B-Hop
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
New Buffalo, Michigan (April 14th, 2013)– With blinding hand split and an impenetrable defense, southpaw sensation Cedric Agnew won every round on April 13, 2013, at Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Michigan, to win the United States Boxing Association Light Heavyweight title over the overrated Yusaf Mack. The event was a sellout at the new boxing venue.
One judge’s score of 120-108 was correct, while the other judges at 118-108, and 115-113, were way off the mark. Agnew, no relation to the late American Vie-President Spiro Agnew, won every round. Agnew, 26, of Chicago, Illinois, is now 26-0, 13 knockouts. Mack, 33, falls to 31-6-2, 17 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Both Agnew and fellow American 25-0-1 Marcus Oliveira, by virtue of their pristine records, are in the hunt for a world title shot and a significant payday against Bernard Hopkins in Fall 2013, if the ageless Hopkins gets past Germany world title challenger Karo Murat at Barclay’s Center this coming July 27, 2013.
Agnew, the former National Golden Gloves champion, holds a fine amateur record of 105-10. He turned professional in January 2007 with a second record knockout of Clark Williams in Lafayette, Indiana.
The now faded and former USBA champion, Mack had beaten Chris Henry, Otis Griffin and Omar Sheika, but also lost to Glen ‘The Road Warrior’ Johnson, Tavoris Cloud, Librado Andrade, Alejandro Berrio and Carl Froch. His best days, by virtue of his losses in his significant bouts, are probably behind the shopworn Philly fighter.
