Gennady Golovkin versus Nobihiro Ishida WBA IBO Fight Preview

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent

Monte Carlo, Monaco (March 27, 2013)– World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization World Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan will defend his world titles against Japanese challenger Nobuhiro Ishida in the main event on March 30, 2013, at Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco, in a 12 round world title bout.

Golonkin is the third ranked middleweight in the world on BoxRec behind WBC titeholder Sergio Gabriel Martinez and IBF titleholder Daniel Geale, the other middleweight titleholders. WBO world champion Peter Quillin is rated fourth.

Golovkin could be in line for a mega bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. if he wins this bout, with the winner of Golovkin versus Chavez to then face WBC Diamond World Champion Sergio Gabriel Martinez in late 2013 or early 2014 in the penultimate Middleweight World Championship televised Pay-Per-View confrontation. Gennady Golovkin’s road will not be an easy one to reach Chavez and Martinez.

Nobihiro Ishida has figured in six consecutive significant bouts which have gone the 12 round distance at 154 and 160 pounds against Marco Antonio Avendano (twice), Oney Valdez, Rigoberto Alvarez, Paul Williams and Dmitry Pirog, fighters with a combined 157 wins.  Mixed in with that are two crisp first round knockouts over fighters who dared to stand right in front of Ishida (a former WBA World Light Middleweight champion), try to trade, and got knocked out. One of them was 27-0 number one contender James Kirkland, which serves as a warning to Golovkin. His 22 knockouts are impressive on paper when compared to Ishida’s 24-8-2 record with nine knockouts, but the whole world knows Ishida can definitely hit with power after taking out James Kirkland with crisp, accurate and fearless power shots.

In a nutshell, Golovkin cannot stand in front of Ishida. This is because Ishida has demonstrated the ability to move forward with power punches when his opponent stands stationary. Ishida has gone 72 rounds with six recent world class opponents, so he is not likely to fit the pattern of Golovkin’s other opponents. Nobuhiro Ishida is a solid puncher who gets inside, and mixed his punches well as the busier fighter.

To win, Golovkin has to come in on Ishida with angles. Golovkin has to give Ishida angles while throwing his punches, with a lot of head movement, so Ishida has no clear target. Golovkin can punch, but with Ishida he will have to move-and how. Golovkin is 5’10” to Ishida’s taller 6’1″. If Ishida succeeds in jabbing Golovkin from the outside and keeping out of range, Ishida could create problems for Golovkin. Ishida has enough quality experience to attempt his game plan, and Golovkin needs to be ready to counter it. Ishida is a wonderful light middleweight boxer. He scored a wonderful win over James Kirkland at 154 pounds. Ishida should not be fighting at 160, as he lacks power at the higher weight. Ishida should go back to 154 pounds.

Prediction: Gennady Golovkin Win Unanimous Decision 12 Nobuhiro Ishida
