Arthur Abraham vs. Robert Stieglitz 2 Recap
By Tom Mauriello
Magdeburg, Germany (March 23rd, 2013)– They say the hardest thing in sports is to beat a person or team twice, and this could not have been a truer statement in Germany as Robert Stieglitz 44-3-(25KO’s) regained his WBO Super Middleweight championship via TKO after truly dominating Arthur Abraham 36-4-(28KO’s).
Abraham came out ugly in the 1st and Stieglitz imposed his will and took the fight to Arthur Abraham who looked like he was not ready for the opening bell.
The 2nd round had Stieglitz getting rough and coming at Abraham with a very aggressive style looking to hurt champion. Abraham comes back after the ref warns Stieglitz for leading with his Head and Abraham fires out at him. Abraham is then hurt very badly with an uppercut at the end of the round. It looked as if Stieglitz was about to finish the fight if the bell did not sound.
Stieglitz goes right back to his ferocious attack at the start of 3. He was landing heavy shots and throwing very hard body shots. Abraham seemed to want no part of this, and was not throwing back and just absorbing heavy punishment. Left eye of Abraham almost shut now after beginning to swell in the 2nd. Stieglitz refuses to slow down his attack. He came at the current champion with everything he had. Abraham weathers the storm and gets back on his horse with some offense. After a few rabid punches from Abraham, the ref deducts a point from Abraham. This is followed up by a violent exchange at the first sense of urgency from Abraham.
The doctor stops the fight in between the 3rd and 4th rounds, and Stieglitz is a winner after a dominant performance. Stieglitz establishes himself as a true champion at the super middleweight division as well as possible challenger to Andre Ward. Arthur Abraham came out slow, and was out punched and out worked by Robert Stieglitz. After suffering loses to Andre Ward, Carl Froch, and Andre Dirrel, the 168 pound division does not look very promising for the 33 year old veteran.
Robert Helenious 19-0-(11KO’s) took home a lackluster Unanimous decision victory over Michael Sprott 37-20(17KO’s). Nor the fans or the large heavyweight from Germany were impressed by Helenious’s victory who cited a nagging hand injury for his poor performance. Lukas Konecny 49-4-(23KO’s) defeated Karim Anchour (14-4-(KO’s) via a Technical Decision for the WBO European Title after the fight goes to the scorecards after an accidental head butt opened up two severe cuts on the eye of Konecny.
