Abdusalamov Knocks Out Bisbal in Brutal Five Round Slugfest
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent- Ringside
Atlantic City, NJ (March 9th, 2013)– In a five round brutal slugfest featuring numerous power head shots from both contestants, reminiscent of George Foreman versus Ron Lyle in January 1976,
Russian southpaw heavyweight knockout artist Magomed ‘Mago’ Abdusalamov retained his World Boxing Council WBC USNBC in a brutal five round slugfest over Victor Bisbal on the undercard of a six bout card at the Superstar Theater at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Friday night, March 8, 2013, promoted by Sampson Lewkowitz and Sampson Boxing, in which Bisbal got knocked out.
Abdusalamov, 17-0 with 17 knockouts, Oxnard, California, by way of Makhachkala, Russia, got surprised in the opening two rounds when Victor Bisbal, now 21-2, 15 knockouts, Salinas, Puerto Rico, opened the bout fast and gave Abdulsalamov a vicious beating with heat shots, staggering him and making the bout interesting. The shots were not enough to get Abdusalamov out of there, but it kept the bout interesting. Experts believed on paper Bisbal had no chance, owing to the difference in quality of opponents between the two fighters. They were wrong. It was a good heavyweight bout while it lasted, and bisbal was certainly in the house trying to win.
Bisbal came into the bout with a sixteen bout win streak going back to December 2006, all wins which took place in Puerto Rico. In April 2006, Bisbal got knocked out on the second round by Domonic Jenkins in Las Vegas, Nevada, a fighter who lost five of his last seven bouts, raising questions about whether Bisbal could really win a step bout outside of Puerto Rico against a true quality ‘A’ rated fighter.
The third and four rounds amounting to trading of bombs, and it became blatantly obvious with this style of fighting, judges were meaningless because one of the two fighters was going to go. Abdusalamov did better in the third and fourth, turning the tide, and finally hurting Bisbal with heavy power punches to the head late in round four, with Bisbal ready to go near the end of the fourth round.
In a sense, Bisbal got it right, training to win, using a game plan to come out throwing thunder, surprise Abdusalamov and get him out early. Bisbal’s fatal flaw-and the flaw of his corner-was in not understanding what he was doing right during the bout and sticking with it. Whenever Bisbal moved to the left of Abdusalamov while penetrating inside, he got his front foot to the outside of Abdusalamov and he was tearing him apart. When he stopped moving to the left consistently, he allowed Abdusalamov to get back into the fight. Bisbal still had a chance to win going into round five, if he had the intelligence to keep moving left and score. He did not.
Bisbal and Abdusalamov both slowed down, tiring in the furious pace, brrathing hard. Standing in front of Abdusalamov and not moving, Bisbal was an easy target. Abdusalamov finally knocked an exhausted stationary punch drunk down and out with Bisbal with heavy head power shots from both hands at 1:12 of the fifth round.
