Tale of The Two Fighting Zamoras

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (February 16th,  2013)–Cuban fighter Brunet Zamora ‘ El Italian Salsero’ Fernandez, now fighting out of Trieste, Italy, has won the vacant EBU-EU European Lightweight title with a 12 round majority decision over Krzysztof Szot in Trieste, Italy. Brunet Zamora is now 24-1, 10 knockouts.

A Bronze medalist at the 2002 European Amateur Boxing Championships, Zamora turned professional at age 30 on February 18, 2005, with a first round knockout at 1:58 of the first over 0-4 Pavel Nemecek in Rovigo, Italy. Zamora won his first 20 consecutive bouts and the World Boxing Association Inter-Continental Light Welterweight title, which he defended three times. Zamora fought a 12 round majority draw and a 12 round decision loss to 30-0-1 IBF International Light Welterweight champion Denis Shafikov. After decisioning Michael Carrero in a six rounder in Italy, Zamora went down to 135 pounds, where he gained, power, speed and effectiveness.  He could be a long shot candidate to fight the winner of the upcoming Richard Abril (the Cuban who holds the interim WBA Lightweight title) versus 23-0 Sharif Bogere of Uganda on March 2, 2013, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at The Joint in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Brunet Zamora of Cuba is not related to the legendary Olympic Bantamweight Silver Medalist Alfonzo Zamora of Mexico City, Mexico, the former World Boxing Association Bantamweight champion who fought 38 bouts between 1973 and 1980, and was in seven WBA Bantamweight world title bouts. Alfonzo Zamora’s last ring appearance was marred by tragedy, but it was not his. Alfonzo Zamora was stopped on eye cuts in the third round by Rigoberto Gigio Estrada on September 18, 1980, in the preliminary bout to the main event to the Lupe Pintor versus Johnny Owen World Boxing Council Bantamweight title bout, in which Owen was not unconscious late in the 12th round and never regained consciousness, dying two months later. Alfonzo Zamora, now 59, probably hoped for a final world title shot at Lupe Pintor if he had beaten Estrada, and finished his career at age 26 with a professional ring record of 33-5 with 32 knockouts.
