Redkach Blows Away Rivera at Roseland
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
New York, NY (February 22, 2013)–In the main event of a seven bout card at Roseland Ballroom in New York City promoted by Lou DiBella Entertainment on Thursday night, February 21, 2013, junior welterweight prospect Ivan ‘Junito’ Redkach of Los Angeles, California, blew away Sergio Rivera of Sonoma, Mexico, stopping him at 2:06 of the first round.
DiBella Entertainment fighters knocked out all six of their opponents within three rounds. According to welterweight contender Gabriel Tito Bracero’s co-manager Richie Komasso at ringside, Bracero is one of a number of DiBella Entertainment fighters who deserve a chance to be matched up against better opposition. Komasso expressed his frustration, and complained bitterly at the matchups his fighter, like other DiBella fighters, have been getting lately. “Gabriel Tito Bracero doesn’t need to keep getting head butted by guys with seven losses on club shows!”
Lately, Lou DiBella’s fighters have gotten so good nobody wants to fight them. Lou continues to challenge other top promoters to fight his fighters, who continue to avoid many of them. This situation is discussed in a separate Real Combat Media story.
Redkach, now 14-0, 12 knockouts, began landing power shots to the head of Rivera, cutting off the ring and walking him down. Rivera tried to maneuver away from Redkach moving along the ropes going around the ring. However Redkach landed a flurry of power shots and Rivera stumbled off the ropes to the canvas and got up.
Referee Shada Murdaugh did not issue a count to Rivera as Rivera bounced right back up and fought on. Redkach trapped Rivera in his own corner, landing head bombs till Rivera wilted to the canvas on one knee. Rivera beat the count at nine somehow, but his eyes were classy, prompting the referee to call an immediate halt to the brief affair, which was scheduled for eight, but sent everyone home early instead of late. Rivera’s padded record fell to 17-11-2, with 10 knockouts. All of Rivera’s 17 wins are in Mexico. His record in the United States fell to 0-6.
According to promoter Lou DiBella, “I think He’ll (Redkach) be ready for a bout with a prospect on television six months to eight months away (from now). He’s ready for a 15-0 like himself (now). I don’t think he’s ready for Gamboa (yet).”
Redkach went life and death with New York State Lightweight champion Edward Valdez in December 2012 in the same ring at Roseland, which provided Redkach with a good test as Valdez took him to school. Ivan Redkach’s career would definitely benefit if promoter Lou DiBella can take the fighter up one notch in quality of opposition to the next level. Rivera was not much of an opponent. Redkach needs to step up in class to get respect and recognition. Rivera was clearly not a quality opponent for Redkach, who is on the way up to a world rating position and clearly worthy of better opposition.
Result: Ivan Redkach TKO 1 Sergio Rivera, Junior Welterweights (2:06)
Referee: Shada Murdaugh. Rivera took a knee for a nine count in the first round.
In the only decent fight on the card, Brooklyn, New York 6-2 Female Super Flyweight Keisher McLeod Wells won a six round unanimous decision over 0-2 Jacqueline Park of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. scores were 58-55, 58-56, 58-56 for Wells. It appeared Wells won every round, but both the crowd and judges seemly completely disinterested in the outcome, so the scoring came out closer than it was.
The scheduled debut of Ecuadorian heavyweight Ytalo Perea was scratched when challenger Raymond Perez of Holland, Michigan failed the New York State Athletic Commission prefight physical due to high blood pressure. Perea posed for pictures.
Those in attendance included promoter Lou DiBella, trainer Tommy Gallagher, HBO television boxing commentator Harold Lederman, former world champion Junior Jones, and welterweight boxers Dmitry Salita and Gabriel Tito Bracero.
