Dmitry Salita Versus Camacho Crossroads Fight Preview

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media correspondent

Brooklyn, NY (February 7th, 2013)–Ukrainian born welterweight boxer Dmitry ‘Star of David’ Salita of Brooklyn, New York, 35-1-1, 18 knockouts, age 30, will meet southpaw Hector Camacho Jr., a Puerto Rican born light middleweight out of Orlando, Florida, 54-5-1, 29 knockouts, age 34 in a ten round crossroads bout on the undercard at Barclays Center Brooklyn on March 27, 2013. In October 2012 at Barclay, Salita, a pro since June 2001, won a six round decision over Brandon Hoskins in his most recent outing.

Fight fans and the general public will be taking a careful look at the emotional state of Hector ‘ Machito’ Camacho Jr. after the murder of his legendary father, Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho Sr., on November 24, 2012. Camacho Sr. was not injured or stopped in 88 professional bouts, one of the most solid chins in boxing history. Camacho Sr. has been stopped three times, including being knocked out for the full ten count down and out in two of his last four bouts in the last two years. Hector Camacho Jr. went pro in October 1996, and is a veteran of 60 professional bouts.

Camacho Jr.’s superiority as the harder hitter should determine the winner of this bout. Machito Camacho Jr. is going to come forward as faster, sharper, and more experienced, and outbox Dmitry Salita. The judges could perhaps give Camacho sympathy on the cards. But if Camacho Jr. cannot get over his father’s death, then Salita will eat Camacho Jr. alive. Whether his father’s death will affect Camacho Jr. at this point is hard to determine-we do not know. He will always be thinking about his dad, the ‘macho man’. The public will also be thinking about his dad.

Camacho is a much more sound fighter than Salita, and should knock out Salita in the eighth or ninth round. Camacho has more drive and incentive to win now. Salita can go the distance by doing neck exercises. At this point, Salita does not move his head and fights too stationary, which caused his one round knockout loss to Amir Khan in December 2009, with Khan producing a three knockdowns in 76 seconds, the first in only ten seconds. Salita was just too stationary and was not moving.

Between Camacho Sr. and Camacho Jr., can you compare father and son, like Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Jr.? Nope. Only the name is similar. Camacho Sr. was in with some of the best fighters in the world. His chin was solid. His heart was bigger than his chin. Camacho Jr. was knocked out in the sixth round by 12-1-1 Luis Grajeda in Chihuahua Mexico in his last appearance in the ring in July 2012, only two years after David Lemieux knocked him out in the first round in Montreal, Canada.

Salita is a throwback fighter. Salita does not move too much. For Salita to win he would have to catch Camacho early, and catch him cold by the fifth round. Salita does not have the power to do it. Salita has a better chance of dropping Camacho with a body shot fighting on the inside close. If he can bring the bout to the inside against Camacho, the tempo of the bout and its conclusion will be a different story

OR if Camacho Jr. cannot clear his emotional head and get over his father’s death, Dmitry Salita will end this televised bout by stoppage swiftly-and it won’t be pretty.

In some respects this bout is a toss up. Salita, who fights 141 to 154 pounds, has fought only his last four fights 19 149 pounds or higher. Camacho Jr., who fought as low as 138 pounds in the 1990s, has fought at light middleweight or higher over 215 pounds, sufficient enough experience at light middleweight where this bout is being fought to give him the edge in experience at the higher weight. However, he was knocked out for the count in his last bout. If he has nothing left, Salita will know, and have a better chance of outpointing a now faded Camacho. Which Camacho will show up in the ring is a good question. Salita is a most consistent fighter in terms of ability, Camacho is not.
