Carrasquillo Win Sets Up Douglin Rematch

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (February 2, 2013)–Hard hitting Doel ‘Amish Boy’ Carrasquillo scored a unanimous six round decision win over veteran Dennis Sharpe in the opening bout of a six bout card at the Staten Island Hilton Garden Inn on January 31, 2013, setting up a rematch with Denis Douglin, who fought in the preliminary bout to the main event on the same card.

Carrasquillo stopped Douglin in the third round of a bout in Maryland in 2011.

Carrasquillo was a last minute substitute for Florida fighter Ibahim King. Carrasquillo, 39, was in awe as to how he could get a fair matchup against the like of the 37 year old Sharpe after years of fighting only the top contenders. “I don’t understand how this could be,” Carrasquillo wondered at the prefight weigh-in.

Carrasquillo, now 17-23, 14 knockouts, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a well known gatekeeper opponent in the welterweight and light middleweight ranks. Both fighters took the bout at 159 pounds, Carrasquillo’s first bout at middleweight. Sharpe, a veteran middleweight and super middleweight trial horse from Bayonne, New Jersey, now 17-10-4, 4 knockouts, came in shape to fight and took Carrasquillo’s best shots. The only ‘moment’ in the bout occurred in the middle rounds when Sharpe accidentally poke Carrasquillo in the right eye, sending him backwards to the ropes blinking momentarily, but Carrasquillo recovered.

Carrasquillo and Sharpe are noteworthy because their list of name opponents reads as a regular who’s who of boxing today. Carrasquillo has fought Demitrius Hopkins, Kevin Bizier, Kenny Abril, Jamaal Davis, Ray Robinson, Shamone Alvarez (Win KO 5), Ronald Cruz, Denis Douglin (Win KO 3), Alex Perez, Ayi Bruce, Maurice Chalmers (Win KO 3), Jorge Melendez (Win KO 5), Emmanuel Taylor, Willie Nelson, Steve Chambers, Mike Arnoutis, Rashad Holloway, Ricardo Williams Jr. Patrick Lopez, 11-0 Wayland Willingham (Win KO 1), Brian Camechis, Keenan Collins (Win KO 1), Mike Jones, Tim Coleman, martin Tucker, Tony Caldwell (Win KO 4), Damon Antoine, Kevin Carmoody (Win KO 1) and Wade Jones (Win KO 2) among others on his professional ledger. Carrasquillo had lost five eight round bouts in a row to top contenders coming into this bout, possibly all bad decision robberies, coming into this bout, and knocked out welterweight contender Shamone Alvarez and light middleweight prospect Denis Douglin right before that.

Sharpe went undefeated in his first 20 bouts. He is winless in his last 13 bouts which include three draws, going back to 2004, going from a rising prospect to trial horse journeyman. Sharpe has fought James Kirkland, Earl Allen (Win KO 4), Ron Kull (Win KO 3), Don Labbe ( Win KO 4), Giovanni Lorenzo, Pawel Wolak, Deandre Lattimore (Lose 8), Peter Quillin, Ronald Hearns (Lose 8), Andy Lee (Lose 6), James McGirt (Lose 8). 10-1 Josh Crouch (Majority Draw 8 in November 2012), Dhafir Smith (Win 4), and drew with Horace Cooper and Patrick Thompson, both fighters with winning records, among others on his action packed ledger of bouts.

Both Carrasquillo and Sharpe gave their all, slugging it out in an exciting contest, a fair match in a neutral location for both fighters. Carrasquillo might have lost a bit of power at the higher weight of 159 pounds, and should go back to welterweight and light middleweight to regain his knockout form when he does win. Overall, an exciting gatekeeper matchup which proves you never know what will happen when you put two trial horses together.

Carrasquillo smartly gave away the first round to Sharpe, covering defensively on the ropes to see if Sharpe would punch himself out. When it did not happen, Carrasquillo was forced to go at it toe-toe-toe with Sharpe in front of him in center ring, and fight his way through the road block, walking him down slowly and applying pressure and forcing Sharpe to counter when he could. It worked.
