According to some internet sources, Danny Garcia “might” be pulling out due to a rib injury or thumb injury??? Hopefully tomorrow, Real Combat Media will have confirmation.

Speaking of Zab Judah, I Remember Paris

Paris vs. Judah Weigh-in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re-3jDBD5uk

Everyone continues chatter talk as to whether Danny Garcia versus Zab Judah 12 World Boxing Association Super and World Boxing Council Light Welterweight titles scheduled for the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, on February 9, 2013, will ever take place, with the rumor Garcia has a broken rib now circulating like wildfire. Judah, a Brooklyn native and former world welterweight champion known for trash talk and prefight hype, wants this bout bad. After losing to Amir Khan, I wonder if Judah can rise to the occasion, though he has done better at light welterweight 140 pounds than at 147 in bouts I have covered for the media.

Speaking of Zab Judah, I remember Paris. Not Paris, France, I remember Vernon ‘Iceman’ Paris, who was undefeated at 27-0and ripe to fight Judah as I arrived at the prefight press conference in downtown Manhattan on March 23, 2012.

On that day, I was not present as a reporter or correspondent, but was present as the bucket man working for one of the fighters on the undercard. That day remains the only prefight press conference I have ever attended, as I work during the day and cover fighters as a writer and photographer on evenings, weekends and holidays…whenever I can.

When you play the video above of the Judah-Paris brouhaha,  you can see me with the glasses in the black trainer’s jacket with white trim starting at 0:40 behind the camera in front of me as the madness unfolds. You can see me again at 0:54 smiling at the camera briefly as the verbal trash talk war continues. You see me one final time standing sideways watching the spectacle at 1:09 at the video clip ends.

To be present at a Zab Judah event, one has to give Zab Judah credit for one thing………….he can win a fight with his mouth, perhaps the most noteworthy fighter to talk the talk since Muhammad Ali. If the rumor proves true that Danny Garcia is backing out of his title bout with Judah due to a busted rib, Judah, who was present at the Lucas Matthysse-Mike Dallas Jr. one round joke last night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, will demand Garcia be stripped and that he-and not Garcia-should enjoy the WBA and WBC world light welterweight titles and all the big money, publicity and magnificent good fortune such a fight will bring him.

Judah’s problem is that Judah versus Matthysse has already taken place, in November 2010, won by Judah by split decision in 12 after Zab came off the canvas. Matthysse probably should have won the bout, but he was a bit tentative and cautious during the first seven or eight rounds, enabling Zab to do just enough to win the split decision despite the knockdown.

To what extent the WBA and the WBC can come together to postpone and reschedule Garcia versus Judah if the bout needs rescheduling, or if either or both would strip Garcia, remains an unknown at this point. Maybe do the rescheduled bout in Barclay’s Center again, or in Garcia’s Philadelphia. Who knows?

Since Bernard Hopkins is still scheduled to fight Tavoris Cloud for the International Boxing Federation Light Heavyweight title on the same night as Judah-Paris, the February 9, 2013, boxing card at Barclay’s Center is still a go with or without Danny Garcia versus Zab Judah. If Garcia versus Judah has to be rescheduled, though, and Zab has done the work to try to win this bout, Zab will crying foul from now to Timbuktu. Garcia is smelling Floyd Mayweather Jr., as is Robert Guerrero.

At 48, if Hopkins wins, they will say Cloud was overprotected. If Hopkins loses, they will say he was too old, like Glen Johnson. If it’s drawn, the boxing experts will say have a Cloud-Hopkins II. Hopkins remains a big television pay-per-view attraction.

Perhaps Judah is angry not just at the possibility Garcia is trying to duck him for one reason or another, but because Judah’s supporters have purchased most of the Barclay’s Centers tickets to see if Zab can kick Garcia’s you know what….or not.

Somehow, I don’t figure Judah to beat Garcia, but what if Garcia doesn’t show? Judah’s trash talk will turn the boxing press and the Garcia camp into Dog Day Afternoon. Take it from a reporter with experience with Judah, Zab can talk!
