Staten Island Greg Cohen Fight Card Preview
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Staten Island, NY (January 29th, 2013)–Greg Cohen Promotions present an exciting nine bout card of professional boxing at the Staten Island Hilton on Thursday evening, January 31, 2013, featuring the main event bout between Greg Cohen southpaw middleweight prospect Denis Douglin and southpaw Jose Angel ‘Silver Boy’ Rodriguez. Douglin was the 2008 National Golden Gloves Middleweight champion.
Matchmaker Eric Bottjer may have gone too far after Douglin’s recent knockout loss to BoxRec Top 20 20-0 light middleweight contender Jemelle Charlo, who knocked out Douglin in five rounds at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in June 2012, and then knocked out Harry Joe Yorgey at the Hard Rock Casino in Los Vegas this past weekend. Douglin versus Silver Boy is a do or die fight for both men.
Douglin, a college boy trained by his mother, will face 16-2-1 New York City southpaw Jose Angel Rodriguez, known as ‘Silver Boy’. Silvery Boy, a KEA Boxing fighter, has been out of the ring since August 2010. Silver Boy’s two credible losses are controversial decisions to then United States Boxing Association champion LaJuan Simon and to George Walton for the vacant USA New York State Middleweight title. Silver Boy, an International Boxing Federation North American Middleweight champion whose win slate includes decision victories over Russell Jordan, Darnell Boone, Keenan Collins and Juan Novoa, is a fine technical boxer but lacks knockout power, witnessed by having only two knockout on his ledger.
New Jersey’s Douglin, now 14-2, 8 knockouts, was also stopped in the third round by light middleweight gatekeeper Doel Carrasquillo in February 2011 in an upset.
Carrasquillo is a slow, flat footed move forward short fighter who can only hit his opponents if they stand right in front of him, but has knockout punch. Douglin got caught standing in front of Carrasquillo in the same way as Shamone Alvarez a year later. Both men got taken out fighting without sticking and moving and trying to slug it out with a power puncher.
While silver Boy Rodriguez may be a bit rusty after two and a half year out, Douglin has failed to pass the litmus test twice at light middleweight. Since this bout is at middleweight, Silver Boy Rodriguez has the experience at this weight Douglin does not, and should either decision Douglin, or stop him between the sixth and the eighth rounds. Depending on his training camp, Douglin might be able to give this bout a better go, and if Silver Boy has prepared to do battle, Staten Island might have a most exciting 8 round main event. Based on experience, if the bout goes to the cards, Rodriguez is looking at 78-74 or 77-75 cards if he does his job well, but he should still come out ahead of Douglin. A majority or split decision in the Rodriguez-Douglin contest would be indicative of a southpaw war, but in my view, Rodriguez will win by virtue of superior experience in this weight class.
