Cuban Boxer Florentino Fernandez Dies at 76

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (January, 29, 2013)–Born in Santiago de Cuba, he was nicknamed ‘The Ox’. Though he never won a world title, from 1956 to 1972, Cuban middleweight and light heavyweight Florentino Fernandez had a career record of 50 wins, 16 losses, and 2 draws, with 43 knockouts, one of Cuba’s hardest punching fighters ever. He lost a disputed 15 round split decision to Gene Fuller for the World Middleweight title in August 1961. When Fidel Castro’s Communist Cuba outlawed professional boxing, Fernandez moved to Miami, Florida, and fought on fight cards promoted by Chris Dundee.

His biggest and best known bouts included a knockout loss to Rubin Hurricane Carter, and a knockout win over Jose Torres. In 2003, Fernandez was named one of Ring Magazine’s 100 greatest all-time punchers. Mostly his 43 knockouts gained him his greatest notoriety, sort of the Earnie Shavers of the middleweight division. However, Fernandez never got to fight the likes of Nino Benvenuti, Carlos Monzon or Bob Foster, which had been the goal of his final comeback till he retired in 1972.

In later years, Fernandez coached amateur boxers in Coconut Grove, Florida.
