Brooklyn, NY (December 14th, 2012)– Styles make fights. It all boils down to the preparations, getting ready in the gym, and coming up with the right game plan. If you asked a million people before the Pacquiao Marquez IV fight if Pacquiao was going to get knocked out, 999,999 would have said no.
Zab Judah does not have the power that most light welterweight contenders today have. Of somewhat interest is the baiting ‘trash’ type talk Judah engages in, to trigger press conference fights, cause controversy and sell tickets. There is, to the perceptive boxing analyst, considerable psychology attempted by Judah to outpsych his opponents subconsciously before his bouts. Bating them in verbally, it is a trap.
Of highest interest is Zab Judah’s mind. Beneath the surface, Zab Judah has considerable smarts, far more than his siblings. His brother, light heavyweight Daniel Judah, has lost seven decisions in a row, and has won only four of his last 15 bouts.
It is possible by executing the correct game plan, Zab Judah can outsmart Danny Garcia. Ring maturity can happen is any boxer’s career at any point, and Zab Judah might just about be there. He has always remained a factor, as evidenced by his ability to decision 27-0 Lucas Matthyse over 12 rounds, and stop 26-0 Vernon Paris in the ninth round of the IBF world title elimination bout leading to the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association Light Welterweight title opportunity Zab Judah now has. If Judah’s ability to box does reach its fight prime against Danny Garcia, which it did not against Amir Khan, the outcome could be remarkable.
Fights are not won the night of the fight. They are won in the gym. Danny Garcia has a puncher’s chance. He can knock out Zab Judah with one shot. Danny Garcia lacks Zab Judah’s technical boxing skills. Amir Khan was clearly outboxing Danny Garcia when he got caught by Garcia’s power shots.
To win this fight, Zab Judah has to stick and move, and not be there when Danny Garcia throws punches. Judah is not going to win by knockout against Danny Garcia, and that’s for sure. Zab can defeat Danny Garcia by 12 round decision, but only if he stays away from Garcia. With a consistent performance into the later rounds, southpaw Zab could expose Danny Garcia.
However, Danny Garcia should win this fight. To win, Garcia has to rough Judah up and make it a war! Judah does not box well under pressure sometimes, and against Garcia he should crack. It’s all about executing the game plan.
If Zab Judah gets knocked down, and Garcia goes in for the kill, Garcia might leave himself exposed to Judah’s counterpunch, like Manny Pacquiao did last weekend against Juan Manuel Marquez. Garcia could get caught.
Danny Garcia is going in for the kill. His knockout of Zab Judah will be in the first eight rounds. If not, then Judah by 12 round decision. If Judah makes it into the ninth round, he has a good chance of winning the 12 round decision.
Two ton Tony Galento and Earnie Shavers are examples of great power punchers.
They were knockout artists, but they never have the ability or capacitity to learn and grow as technical boxers. Danny Garcia does have the ability and capacity to grow as a boxer at this point in hid career, and how well he continues to develop for progressively higher level fights like Judah, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and beyond, is anybody’s guess. Garcia is a rising star, but still relatively untested, as evidenced by his recent rematch stoppage of the faded Erik Morales.
Zab Judah can make this bout as clean or as sloppy as he wants to. Zab has to be determined to get in and out on Garcia. Judah has to create angles, hit and not get hit, and stay out of Garcia’s range.
For Danny Garcia to remain in the running for a future megafight date with Floyd, it all depends how his game plan plays out. Floyd has to believe a bout with Garcia could be challenging and would generate both box office interest at either’s the Barclay’s Center, Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas. Floyd has no interest in fighting Zab Judah again. A win by Judah over Garcia could get him another fight against, Pacquiao, Marquez or Devon Alexander (if he defeats Kell Brook in January). Zab is a Brooklynite, and could sell these fights to the hometown crowd at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn.
Give a fighter like Danny Garcia a free shot opening, and you are dead. Zab’s jabs were sharp against Vernon Paris and he made no mistakes. If Zab can outbox Garcia technically going into the ninth round, then the bout would become interesting. It is not likely could outbox his way to a decision win over Garcia, but it is possible.
Danny Garcia is a dangerous motivated fighter. The excitement he generates is caused by his all or nothing punching power, which translated makes him a successor to Manny Pacquiao, provided Garcia does not get hit.
Prediction
Danny Garcia is going in for the kill. His knockout of Zab Judah will be in the first eight rounds. If not, then Judah by 12 round decision. If Judah makes it into the ninth round, he has a good chance of winning the 12 round decision.
