Another rematch, another controversy. Benson Henderson (17-2) and Frankie Edgar (14-3-1) threw down for a second time, and this decision was debatable as their last decision. Benson won the match with a split decision (49-46, 48-47, and 48-47), but the Pepsi Center lit up with boos once the decision was read.
The first and second rounds were the only obviously scored rounds of the fight. The first went to Henderson as he controlled round with strong leg kicks and solid striking. The second round went to Edgar, who controlled the fight with solid boxing and dominant wrestling.
The last third and fourth rounds were up in the air. Benson was able to land many significant strikes, but Frankie seemed to control the exchanges and always was pressuring Henderson. The last round, in my book, was scored for Edgar as he was pushing the pace and was controlling the striking exchanges.
Ultimately, we won’t see another rematch, at least not for awhile. Nate Diaz has the next shot at Benson’s title, but with how strong the LW division is right now, we may see Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone getting a shot in the near future.
In the Co-Main Event, Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard showed why they were two of the best fighters in the LW division, as they went to war as soon as the bell rang. Melvin controlled the fight early and dropped Cerrone with a massive punch. Cowboy’s chin, however, would not falter and he quickly recovered. Soon, he managed to stagger Guillard and put him away with a bomb of a punch.
This card was packed with solid fights. See below for the full results.
