Christy Martin vs. Mia St. John II August 14th

By: Jon Campbell

On August 14th at the Table Mountain Casino in California, two experienced female fighters will battle it out in the rematch to a fight which happened ten years ago. The prize, both pride and for the vacant WBC Females Light-Middleweight title. Christy Martin (49-5-3) will be looking for her 50th pro win as she takes on Mia St.John (46-11-2). At 44 and 45 years old respectively, these fighters still strive for the top of the game and will aim to prove they are still capable of mixing it with the best.

For Christy Martin, this will be her second comeback fight since the tragic injuries she suffered at the hands of her ex-partner, who stabbed her several times 2010. She is now recovered and ready to fight for the title.

Known as the ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter”, Martin aims to repeat the performance she had over St. John in 2002. She dominated and demonstrated superior talent and won convincingly on all three scorecards.

This bout led to her first world title shot against daughter of ‘the greatest’ and IBA champ at the time Laila Ali, to whom she lost. She finally got her first title in a win against Dakota Stone in 2009, but due to the events which followed her reign did not last long at all. Her first comeback was a loss in a rematch against stone and now she is gunning for St. John.

St. John is stepping up considerably in weight for this bout, despite fighting a couple of times at Welterweight. She primarily fights as a Lightweight. It is safe to say that St. John, along with Martin is past her best days in the ring, losing six of her last ten fights.

Despite losing her title shot at the IBA Light-welterweight strap she has had considerable success in the lighter divisions. At Lightweight, she has won both the WBC and IFBA International titles.

I struggle to see how St. John is going to leave a mark at the Light-Middleweight division. She is not known for her superior punching power even at the lightweight division. Now she steps up three weight classes. She is going to find it difficult to earn the respect of Martin, who has fought dozens of bigger, stronger fighters and has only been stopped twice in her long career. But Mia is very tough and has fought some of the best women boxers in her career.

To conclude, I see Martin winning again in a rematch. The fight may not necessarily be one-sided, but will make us all certain which fighter is the best. I see Martin out-boxing St.John and possibly stopping her in around 5-6 rounds. Regardless, should it go the distance, I predict a wide UD in Martin’s favour.
