Deontay Wilder vs. Kertson Manswell Preview
By: Mike Roach
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (23-0, 23 KO’s) faces Kertson Manswell (22-5, 17 KO’s) this Saturday scheduled for 10 rounds at the Exposition Hall, in Mobile, Alabama.
What can be said about Deontay Wilder is one: He is huge! He is a very young, hungry fighter on the rise looking for a shot at a world title. He needs recognition. Not many know exactly who he is. One good thing about it is, he is signed with Golden Boy. But the main problem is: He doesn’t have much competition in America.
The heavyweight division is not as exciting as the lower weight classes these days. He hasn’t been tested yet. He’s only fought thirty nine rounds in just 23 bouts. All of his sparring partners are at least 6-7 inches shorter than him. No one can get on the inside to give him a challenge, plus he can keep most short opponents at bay with his reach. His jab is solid. He has good head movement and is a smart boxer/ puncher. He has a lot of power as should be expected by an Olympic bronze medalist.
I would love to see him in there with one of the Klitschkos, so that we can see what Wilder would do against a top tier opponent who can take him the distance for 12 rounds. A Derick Chisora would be a good fight for him;Explosive. Also, David Haye, Seth Mitchell (Both talented) or Tyson Fury,( which would be my last choice for him ) could possibly put on a good show against Wilder. The David Price fight would have been a grinder, being that he is an undefeated Olympian (Bronze and Gold medals) also. And He has a title that Wilder desperately needs to solidify himself as World Champion. We have never seen him take a good shot and we do not know how conditioned he is being that his longest bout was only 4 rounds.
On the upcoming fight against Kertson Manswell, I expect a good competitive bout for the first five rounds. Manswell is coming off of a two win first round K.O streak after losing three straight matches in a row with one being a 2cnd round T.K.O stoppage in January of last year. Manswell is slippery and can make Wilder miss at times, but being on a 9 month layoff against a strong, determined big puncher, I don’t see this fight going the distance. Age can also be the defining factor in that Wilder has an 11 year youth advantage over Manswell. Will Wilder’s speed be the issue? Will Manswell’s Ring rust and age be a problem in this competition? We’ll see…Tune in August 4th and be prepared for the young against the old, and the active against the inactive. Get your popcorn and peanuts for the excitement and mystery of this interesting boxing match.
Prediction: Sixth round TKO for Wilder.
