Preview of Victor Ortiz vs. Josesito Lopez
By: Jon Campbell
The MGM Grand in Las Vegas will host a bout between two Mexican-Americans will compete for the WBC Silver Welterweight title when former WBC Welterweight title-holder ‘Vicious’ Victor Ortiz (29-3-2) squares off against California-based Josesito Lopez (29-4).
Ortiz already has a big fight signed for September against the new ‘Golden Boy’ of boxing Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (40-0-1) for his WBC Light-Middleweight strap, on the condition he gets through this bout. I am sure he will be determined to get through this bout in an impressive manner in order to have maximum confidence going in to the possible fight of the year candidate.
Lopez on the other hand has fought decent opposition but is certainly taking a step up against Ortiz as he is yet to face championship level fighters. He will be hoping to deny Ortiz of this opportunity, presumably will not be the guy to fill the spot but nothing will be better of a marketing strategy than to be the ‘party-pooper’ he will be by winning this bout.
Ortiz at 25 has achieved a good amateur career and a seemingly long pro career considering his tender age. Since he has reached the top of the sport he has had two losses against world-class fighters in Floyd Mayweather JR’ (43-0) and heavy-handed Argentinean Marcos Maidana (31-3). He also featured in ‘The Rings’ pick for fight of the year 2011 when he beat Andre Berto (28-1) in a thrilling UD in which both fighters hit the canvas in the first round.
From what both have demonstrated in the ring Ortiz appears to win in all areas. He is a very skillfully technician from the southpaw stance due to his good amateur pedigree, not only this but he has a tendency to produce excitement where possible and shown he can be a tough cookie. However, the manner in which he lost against both Mayweather and Maidana leads me amongst others to question his heart and durability when things are not going his way.
I do not discount a KO win for either as they land a string of powerful punches as they both have respectable KO percentages in excess of 50%. I doubt that Lopez will have the necessary skills to expose Ortiz in order to stop him however.
To conclude, I predict an Ortiz win by a wide decision. He simply is a better boxer and more experienced at the elite level fighting numerous champions and ex-champions. He should not be complacent however as view this as a tune-up fight for Canelo as this may land him in the position to receive a shock as Lopez is certainly no bum.
