Kessler stops Green in 4

By: UK Writer Jon Campbell

Today in the Parken Stadium in Denmark, ‘The Viking Warrior Mikkel Kessler won the WBC Silver Light-Heavyweight title by knocking out the American Allen Green in 4 decisive rounds. Although the title is not massively relevant on the elite stage, the win for Kessler can certainly be considered more significant. Now he has put his injury worries aside and have the confidence which comes with an impressive win. Kessler now has the renewed respect and has put his name there hoping to get a title shot next fight. The manner in which Kessler knocked Green out also sent a message to the upper-echelon fighters. An impressive left hook sent Green to the canvas for the night.

Although Green knocked Kessler down in the first round, Kessler got up and did not appear to be in trouble. Kessler ended the round resetting the fight in his mind. In doing so he controlled the rest of the fight, wobbling Green in rounds two and three. It was clear to see that Kessler was superior to Green in his skill set and general boxing ability as he did not allow Green to get settled with his sharp jab as he has in many of his fights. Unfortunately for Green, following the knockdown he just was outmatched by a better, more experienced fighter and there is not much really to take away from him.

Moving on from this fight, Kessler has put himself in a tremendous position for a title shot at either 168lbs/175lbs. Should he decide to stay at light heavyweight his most preferable option would be to fight either Cloud or Cleverly for a title belt in order to gain leverage and put himself in top of the list to fight the winner of Ward-Dawson. He could have a fight against Hopkins which although he has just lost his titles, is pretty worthwhile in my opinion as it would be a challenge. Allen Green may never quite make it to the level he wishes he could have been due to this loss, even so it will take a few fights to re-establish himself. Green is a contender and it is a shame he just was not good enough to take the chance he had at an upset.
