Heart Of A Champion

By: Anthony L. Gonzalez

This fight was starting to feel like an upset early on in Madison Square Garden in New York, New York . Sergio Martinez was looking very hesitant and the Irishman Matthew Macklin looked to be in control for most of the first 7 rounds. The people who were doubting the 10 to 1 underdog, were starting to think tonight might be an historic upset on St. Patrick’s day. An upset would have been the best day in Irish boxing history.

During round 7, Sergio Martinez was hit with a viscous right hand by the Irishman. Sergio thought it was a slip, but the replay showed it was a clear knockdown as Sergio’s mitt hit the canvas. That round was a 10 to 8 for Macklin and the entire Garden crowd was stunned. At this point, many people were expecting an upset. Even in the online forums many were saying Sergio was overrated and that he was starting to show his age after that round.

The next four rounds, Sergio Martinez came back strong. He knew he was behind on the score cards and needed to win the rest of the rounds. He opened up a severe cut on Macklin. Macklin started to show fatigue and was having a hard time landing shots. Martinez landed many straight left hands and Macklin’s cut was getting worse .

During round 11, Martinez was landing many solid straight left hands at will and dropped Macklin twice. The second knockdown happened at the bell and Macklin beat the count, but he did not know where his corner was. His corner then threw in the towel to save Macklin from any further punishment.

This was an exciting championship fight that proved to fans that Macklin belonged here. Sergio Martinez showed the heart of a champion to comeback from a large scoring deficit to win this fight. He also proved his conditioning was superior to Macklin.

After the fight, many people said Sergio Martinez should fight Floyd Mayweather next. We also may see a Julio Chavez Jr. match up. That is a fight boxing fans deserve to see. Sergio Martinez proved tonight that he is a dangerous opponent for anyone and has a big heart.
