Klitschko Dominates Mormeck, Scores 4th Round KO
By: Boxing Writer Adam Millican
In a one sided performance in which his foe landed only three punches, Wladimir Klitschko scored his 50th knockout victory when he defeated Jean-Marc Mormeck tonight in the fourth round of their bout. Few experts gave Mormeck much of any chance and those predictions proved correct. Klitschko dominated the fight from the opening bell and won in dominant fashion.
Right from the beginning, Mormeck wanted to crowd Klitschko and get inside of his punching range. He did so successfully throughout much of the fight. The result, however, was Klitschko clinching, smothering, and leaning on him and Mormeck was unable or unwilling to throw many punches or work his offense on the inside. Wladimir won the first round of the fight by landing good jabs and hooks. Mormeck was overmatched but came out of the first round without taking major punishment.
Things changed quickly in round two. Klitschko continued to land hooks and started throwing his straight right with increasing frequency. He knocked Mormeck down in the middle of the round on a straight right hand. Mormeck beat the count but things didn’t get any better as the fight progressed.
Round three saw Wladimir continue his domination, landing sharp combinations almost at will. During a clinch he wrestled Mormeck to the ground, which was not considered a knockdown. The end came in round four. Klitschko landed a sharp jab, straight right, left hook combo that sent Mormeck to the canvas. He would not beat the count.
All in all this was a vintage performance for Dr. Steelhammer. He used his excellent footwork and clinching to keep the fight at the range he likes, he used his jab to set up combinations, and despite not being as aggressive as many fans-including this writer-would like, he closed the show in impressive fashion. When asked by Chris Mannix post fight who he might fight next, Wladimir mentioned several names but ultimately said that he wants to fight Chris Arreola in the United States. Although Wladimir would be a heavy favorite, it would surely be a much more entertaining bout than Mormeck was able to provide.
