ALEXANDER POVETKIN VS. MARCO HUCK PREVIEW: CAN HUCK OVERCOME THE ODDS?

This Saturday, February 25th former Olympic gold medalist & current undefeated WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KO’s) will attempt to defend his world title for the second time against the tough Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KO’s) in Stuttgart, Germany. The fight will be televised live in the U.S. by EPIX and it will also be streaming live on EPIXHD.com. Boxing fans can sign up for the stream completely free of charge.

As the WBO Cruiserweight champion, 27 year old Marco Huck is fighting at Heavyweight for the first time in his career and is extremely confident ahead of the big task ahead. Huck says he has the tools to inflict the first defeat on the Russian although he will be giving away almost 20 lb’s in weight on fight night (Huck weighed in at 209 lb’s).

“I´m ready to become heavyweight champion” – Huck, born in Serbia and now living in Germany, said at the final press conference Wednesday. “I would not have taken the fight if I didn´t believe in myself. Povetkin is good, but I can beat him. We once sparred together and he has bad memories of me. On Saturday I will be the new champ. He is going down.”

But Povetkin, seemed unperturbed by Huck’s show of confidence & remained as calm as ever avoiding a war of words with his opponent.
“At first I was surprised about Huck´s challenge because he has never fought at heavyweight before,” Povetkin said. “But I am happy to defend my title against anybody out there. I am in great shape and I will win.”
Povetkin´s new coach Alexander Zimin who has now taken over from well known coach Teddy Atlas, said his fighter is in much better shape than he was for his last fight which was an 8th round knockout victory over contender Cedric Boswell (35-2, 26 KO’s).

“We had a very good preparation,” said Zimin. “Alexander has improved physically. I would say he is 20-30% stronger than in his last fight. But the best is yet to come. He has great potential.”

This should be a entertaining Heavyweight title bout which is rare these days, as both fighters are more about offense than defence and I personally lean towards Alexander Povetkin winning by late stoppage in a back & forth type fight because of his superior technique and slight size advantage.
On the undercard, German heavyweight prospect Edmund Gerber (18-0, 12 KO’s) faces journeyman Oleksiy Mazikin (17-6-2, 4 KO’s) of the Ukraine.
