JERMAIN TAYLOR & ANDRE DIRRELL RECORD COMEBACK VICTORIES

BY: UK BOXING WRITER JAI SINGH

Jermain Taylor (now 29-4, 18 KOs) forced a slightly premature stoppage in the 8th round against his overmatched opponent. Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KOs) also won by TKO in the second round against Darryl Cunningham (24-3, 10 KOs). Both had successful comebacks to the ring.

Jermain Taylors performance was mediocre at best as it seemed he was content on being just on cruise control throughout the bout. Taylor told analyst Steve Farhood after the bout that he had hurt his right hand early in the fight and had to rely on his jab for the bulk of the contest. He left Jessie Nicklow (22-3-3) far behind on the scorecards but his performance was uninspiring to say the least and lacked any real fire behind it.

The veteran claimed after the fight that he looked at the bout as a tune up bout and would step up the competition in future fights.

Andre Dirrell on the other hand did what he needed to do by getting rid of Cunningham in 2 rounds and looked pretty impressive against an opponent that came solely for a paycheque.

“I am just so happy to be back,’’ said Dirrell after this first fight since March 27, 2010. “I wanted it to go further, but I felt really good. My hands felt lighter, my feet felt fast. I’d say I fought at about 99.5 percent, which was more than I could ask for. Time will tell what I do next, but I’m going to continue to work hard. There is such a small window. I’m 28 years old. I’m just going to continue to push forward, But I can finally see the big picture again.’’

In the opening bout of the televised card, former Cuban amateur standout Luis Garcia (12-0, 9 KOs), won his United States debut handing southpaw Alexander “The Great” Johnson his first loss as he dropped to (12-1, 5 KOs).
