Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri? Perhaps Coming Soon To Pay-Per-View
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri is now on the table, being discussed for later in 2014.
Artie Pelullo, the promoter of Ruslan Provodnikov, has a three fight option on new WBO World Light Welterweight champion Chris Algieri with Star Boxing’s Joe DeGuardia. Freddie Roach, who trained Ruslan Provodnikov and works with Manny Pacquiao, does not think Algieri is very marketable. Home Box Office might think differently than Roach, given the exciting fight Algieri won defeating Provodnikov is spite of Roach in the corner.
The key question is overlooked: can Chris Algieri, with a superior height and reach advantage over Pacquiao, defeat him? The answer is yes, and Algieri, with his in and out style similar to Floyd Mayweather Jr., would be happy to move up in weight to fight Pacquiao at 147 pounds, where Pacquiao holds the WBO World Welterweight title.
Pacquiao is scheduled to defend his title on November 22, 2014, in Macao, China. Algieri could be the next challenger. If not Algieri, Bob Arum of Top Rank is looking at Pacquiao for a fifth rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez. If not Pacquiao, Chris Algieri is looking to fight a unification bout with WBC World Light Welterweight champion Danny Garcia at Barclays Center.
