Jamie Munguia Fails Drug Test

Munguia Responds to VADA Post Fight Drug Test After Bruno Surace Rematch, Sample B To Be Tested

Los Angeles, CA (June 1st, 2025)– Super middleweight Jaime Munguia, has issued an official statement in response to a negative VADA post-fight test result. After apparently winning a 12-round rematch on May 4, 2025, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia over Bruno Surace, who knocked him out previously, Munguia tested positive for a banned substance following the bout in the post-fight urinalysis. A representative from Munguia’s team told ESPN KnockOut commentator Salvador Rodriguez that Munguia’s team received a notification from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association Wednesday night regarding Munguia testing positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites in Test A. The representative from Munguía’s team said they will respond shortly and request Test B be opened.

According to Munguia, “Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive. I was tested twice during this training camp (latest training camp for the rematch with Bruno Surace), and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me. Several experts have explained that there are multiple ways contamination can occur, and I am fully willing to undergo any retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete. I will not make any further comments on this matter until this process is complete.”

Munguia, 45-2, 35 knockouts, Tijuana, Mexico, now has 10 days to request analysis of the stored test B result for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites. If his B sample also returns an adverse finding for the banned substance, and such test B results of this type of test A finding are characteristically always the same result, Munguia’s rematch victory over Surace could be overturned to a No-Contest and he then would face a suspension ranging from six months to one year. Many elite fighters take various dietary supplements to support their training regimen. The VADA test has not revealed as yet what triggered the positive test for exogenous testosterone metabolites.

Surace, 26-1-2 with five knockouts, Marseille, France, who came off the canvas in round two to knock out Munguia in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico, in December 2024, lost his unbeaten record to Munguia and his world ranking at 168 pounds. If the rematch bout result with Munguia is then reversed to a No Contest based on Munguia’s B sample confirming the sample A result, Surace’s unbeaten record would be restored. Munguia would then face suspension and fines.
