Nashville, Tennessee (February 6th, 2025)– Oliver ‘The Atomic Bull’ McCall, age 59, the former World heavyweight champion, became the oldest former world heavyweight champion to fight in a sanctioned pro bout when he stopped his opponent, Deputy Sheriff, Gary Cobia, after one round at Texas Troubadour Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
McCall, 61-14 with 40 knockouts, Corpus Christi, Texas, made mincemeat out of Cobia, age 52, now 3-5 with one knockout, Clearfield, Texas. McCall knocked Stacy Frazier in November 2024, on a card which featured eight boxing matches including McCall.
McCall stopped Lennox Lewis in two rounds at Wembley Arena in November 1994, winning the World Boxing Council World Heavyweight title, defending the WBC belt by defeating Larry Holmes, before losing the title to Frank Bruno in 1995. McCall’s career began with a first round stoppage of Lou Bailey in November 1985. I should be noted Jack Johnson’s last ring appearance was an exhibition for U.S. War Bonds at age 66 versus Joe Jeanette in 1945.
While seven of the bouts on the Texas Troubadour card ended in the first or second round, the main event was a different story. Onetime welterweight contender turned light heavyweight Vaughn Alexander, age 39, 19-12-2 with 12 knockouts, Saint Louis, Missouri, fought to an eight round draw with 15-0 Cuban Maidel Sando of Nashville, Tennessee.
