Sulaiman shuts down Canelo vs Bivol for undisputed title at 168: “Bivol can’t participate in a WBC sanctioned fight”
Mexico City, Mexico (May 17th, 2023)– WBC would not sanction a fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol in 168 pounds for the undisputed title, according to Mauricio Sulaiman, who reaffirmed his position about the ineligibility of Russian boxers to fight for WBC titles.
Bivol recently said that he is only interested in fighting Canelo for his 168 pounds titles, including the WBC belt, and to be an undisputed champion. However, the WBC upholds their position that as long as there is no boxing in Ukraine they would not sanction Russian boxers.
“No, not at this moment”, Sulaiman replied to IZQUIERDAZO when asked if WBC would sanction a fight between Canelo and Bivol at 168 pounds. “Our definition was clear. It is a constant and consistent position. Bivol has not approached the process that we opened for all those boxers willing to apply for their specific case to be reviewed. Bivol has not done it. So for the moment, Bivol can not participate in a WBC sanctioned fight”.
Sulaiman reaffirmed WBC position regarding the crisis between Russia and Ukraine. It is the same position that stated when there were negotiations for a fight between Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.
“As long as there is no boxing in Ukraine, there will not be boxing in Russia sanctioned by WBC”, Sulaiman insists.
Last Monday, there were images circulating about an amateur boxing tournament celebrated in an underground subway station in Kharkiv, a city in eastern Ukraine which has been on the front-line of the war.
Sulaiman welcomes the reemergence of boxing in Ukraine.
“It is quite dramatic, but such is sport”, Sulaiman expressed. “The necessity to practice boxing, to be active, to let go of what they have inside. God willing there will be peace, it won’t be soon, but miracles happen”.
