JORGE MASVIDAL DECLINES GILBERT BURNS REQUEST FOR A 5 ROUND FIGHT
Las Vegas, NV (January 31st, 2023)–Last Friday Dana White announced that Jorge Masvidal will be returning to the octagon to face the dangerous BJJ world champion, Gilbert Burns as the co-main event for the Israel Adesanya vs. Alex Pereira card at UFC 287, which will take place April 8th, 2023. The venue has not been announced yet.
Jorge Masvidal (35-16) has lost three straight but remains one of the biggest stars on the UFC roster. The 38-year-old Miami native owns the fastest knockout in UFC history which was a five-second flying knee win over Ben Askren in 2019. This fight with Burns is a must win fight for Masvidal. If Masvidal loses a 4th fight in a row, he will no longer be relevant in the UFC 170lbs division.
Gilbert Burns (21-5), a 36-year-old former title contender from Brazil who trains out of Florida, is coming off a first-round submission victory over Neil Magny on Saturday at UFC 283. Before facing Magny, Gilbert Burns had a Fight of the Year candidate of 2022 where he lost to undefeated UFC star Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 in April of 2022 by a narrow margin. It was the toughest career test for Chimaev in his MMA career so far.
Gilbert Burns requested a 5 round fight BMF Title bout with Jorge Masvidal and here is what Jorge had to say on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, and shut down the request for the belt and round change.
“If they pay me ‘BMF’ money, which UFC isn’t going to up it up for more money,” Masvidal said. “So, sorry Gilbert. I already got my contract, man.
