RCM INTERNATIONAL BOXING RECAP (6/12/22)

Dynamite Dubois, Munguia, Kyoguchi and Nursultanov Show Power, Arias, Berlanga, Davies, Knapp, Kongo and Riakporhe Win Decisions, Witt Falls Short

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Miami, Florida (June 13, 2022)– At age 91, legendary promoter Don King gambled his undefeated regular World Boxing Association World Heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan could handle Daniel ‘Dynamite’ Dubois, and would be ready to meet the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk versus Anthony Joshua upcoming rematch as the mandatory challenger.

In the main event of a Don King Productions eight-bout card at Casino Miami Jai Alai, Miami, Florida, in the shadow of tropical rains and storms in the Florida Keys and Miami area, on Saturday evening, June 11, 2022, Don King gambled wrong. The Casino Miami Jai Alai venue was a far cry from the sands of Las Vegas, Nevada, and a world away from the ‘Rumble in the Jungle, which Don King promoted between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire, on October 30, 1974 in the Ring Magazine 1974 Fight of the Year 48 years ago. Few were in attendance to witness Don King’s probable last hurrah. If Don King’s wiry hair still stands on end now after all this time, likely his hair stood up like a man sticking his finger in an electric socket when this title bout ended. King bid over three million dollars for this promotions, outbidding Frank Warren, and in the end, King got taken to the emotional and financial cleaners. The mismatch would have been more believable id Don King has built up Bryan’s padded record to cash out. The only name of note on Bryan’s 20-0 padded winning record was a washed up ex-champion, Bermaine Stiverne, who was in his forties and had been knocked out in the first round by Deotnay Wilder before being served to Bryan.

Dubois, now 18-1 with 17 knockouts, Greenwich, London, United Kingdom, landed a short overhand right in close which knocked out the sluggish Bryan face first for the ten count early at 1:58 of the fourth round. Bryan, now 22-1 with 15 knockouts, Schenectady, New York, was in survival mode by round three, and now acting the part of of a Rocky Marciano at 21-0 as Dubois used a consistent left jab to pepper Bryan’s head and set up the right hand. Neither fight was doing body work, and Bryan did land a few good shots in the first two rounds, but Dubois relentlessly stayed in Bran’s face. Dubois’ feet were well placed with superior movement, and his legs had good spread, while Bryan’s legs were close together. Bryan’s best maneuver was constantly holding, however Dubois was clearly stronger and in better condition.

If Bryan’s strategy was to drag Dubois into the later championship rounds, as Kevin “Kingpin’ Johnson did for 10 rounds in October 2018 in Leicester, he would have had to outwork Dubois substantially first. Dubois, who prefers to get his man out of there early. Bryan struggled to win a 12-round split decision in his last outing over 17-0-1 late Louisiana substitute at Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, in January 2022, with noted judge Steve Weisfeld scoring the bout 115-112 for Guidry. This sort of a limited performance meant Bryan had to up his game one notch for Dubois, who appeared to be well on his way to becoming the best fighter in the world until Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Joyce derailed him by tenth round knockout due to a dislocated left eye socket in a bout he was winning on two scorecards at Church House in Westminster in November 2020 with the British and European, WBC and WBO regional titular belts at stake.

Dubois short right hand which knocked out Bryan appeared similar to Big George Foreman’s tenth-round k knockout of World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation World Heavyweight champion 35-0 Michael Moorer in the tenth round at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in November 1994. Dubois did not need as much time as Foreman did to dispose of Bryan, with Bryan unable to absorb such a multitude of short range power shots form Dubois as Moorer did from Foreman into the later rounds.

Result: Daniel Dubois KO 4 Trevor Bryan, Heavyweights (1:58)

Dubois wins World Boxing Association Regular Heavyweight title

Jonathan Guidry KO 7 DeCarree Scott, Heavyweights

In the preliminary bout to the Trevor Bryan versus Daniel Dubois main event in Miami, Top 50 underdog heavyweight contender Guidry, now 18-1, 17 knockouts, Houma, Louisiana, knocks out 7-0 Decarree Scott of Decantur, Georgia, who had won a 10 round split decision in his previous bout. Any way you look at it, it was still a mismatch on paper.

Witt’s last bout was in August 2017 in Tijuana, and this was a comeback attempt after five years of inactivity at age 35, to weight classes above his super lightweight days. 19-0-2 former world heavyweight champion James Jeffries was unsuccessful in July 1010 in Reno, Nevada, attempting such a comeback after five years of inactivity at the heavyweight level against Jack Johnson, and Witt is no James Jeffries.

Georgia Arias Win Split Decision 8 Alante Green, Heavyweights

In a bout which probably would have been better off at WBC Bridgerweight, 18-0 Dominican heavyweight prospect George Arias won an eight round split decision over misguided 10-0-1 cruiserweight Alante Green of Cleveland, Ohio. Green holds the NABF and USBA Heavyweight titles, and got one scorecard, 77-75 from noted judge Don Trella. Perhaps his manager, Troy Speakman, wanted to push Green into the heavyweight ranks to go after the big money. Green is not a heavyweight, and should have refused this meaningless bout in terms of his career and future. Money ruins the best of prospects when they are pushed into fighting in the wrong division. Three of Arias’ last four opponents had a combined record of 41-0, but he will need to fight better opponents than the level of Trevor Bryan’s opponents if he wants to be taken seriously.
