Super Welterweight Tim Tszyu Decisions Takeshi Inoue, Remains Untested Outside of Australia

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Sydney, Australia (November 18th, 2021)– Super welterweight contender Tim Tszyu, 20-0 with 15 knockouts, Rockdale, New South Wales, Australia, appears ready for a world title shot after decisioning former world title challenger Takeshi Inoue, now 17-2-1, Tokyo, Japan, over 12 rounds to retain the World Boxing Organisation Asia Pacific and Global regional super welterweight titles. Short of a knockout, it must be acknowledged, foreign fighters never win in Australia and New Zealand in the Far East.

Tszyu did a fine mechanical job of head and body work, moving forward mixing punches effectively. Tsyzu spun Inoue several times and hit him around the head, but could not put him away. Inoue appeared superbly conditioned, and took a great punch. The fact Tsyzu could not do anything with him raises the question of how Tsyzu, like Jeff Horn, would do on an international scale outside of Australia. From Manny Pacquiao to Shane Mosley to Osumanu Adama, foreign fighters have on occasion traveled to Australia for the paycheck and a major title bout. The late super lightweight contender DuJuan Johnson, in his final ring appearance, scored a ninth-round knockout of Brian Janssen at Festival Hall in Brisbane, Australia, on June 1, 1984 is the rarest example of a foreign coming in and icing the Australian. Careful matchmaking usually prevents this.

The late World Middleweight champion (Australian version) Les Darcy never fought outside of Australia. Tsyzu is obviously gunning for either Brian Carlos Castano or Jermell Charlo, who drew over 12 rounds in their titular unification bout at AT&T Center in San Antonio., Texas, this past July 2021. Or, Tsyzu could pursue the winner of the upcoming bout between contenders Patrick Teixeira and Magomed Kurbanov, who are fighting in Ekaterinburg, Russian Federation, on December 11, 2021, for the WBO International Super Welterweight title held by Kubranov. Teixeira lost a 12 rounder in a bid for Castano’s world title in February 2021. Liam Smith, who lost a 12 rounder in a bid for Kurbanov’s world title in Ekaterinburg in May 2021, won the WBA International Super Welterweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Anthony Fowler at Echo Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom, in October 2021. Tszyu has to step up now and face the big boys where the big boys have home field advantage outside of Australia. More likely, the Australians will try to lure ex-champion names like Julian Williams, Jarrett Hurd, Jeison Rosario, Austin Trout or WBC Silver titleholder Erickson Lubin to Australia. Short of big money these names are unlikely to travel to Australia, and will want to face Tsyzu in the United States or the UK, where they have promoter’s edge advantage on USA Showtime, Premier Boxing Champions, DAZN, and Matchroom Boxing on an international scale.
