Another Monster Upset! Teofimo Lopez Gets Beaten in His Hometown by Kambosos

New York, NY (November 28th, 2021)– Teofimo Lopez was upset by the trash talk of challenger George Kambosos Jr. Lopez got even more upset when Kambosos knocked him down in the first round, giving Ferocious George an edge on the scorecards for the next eleven rounds which Lopez could not overcome. With a cut on the corner of his left eye, and with his hometown fans at Madison Square Garden looking on in shock and dismay, Lopez fell to a 12 round split decision upset to visiting and trash-talking Kambosos, losing all of his world titles to the visitor who proved better than he, the fans or the boxing experts had expected.

In the main event of a Matchroom Boxing DAZN televised card at Madison Square Garden Theater, on Saturday night, November 27, 2021, George Kambosos Jr., now 20-0 with 10 knockouts, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, won a 12 round split decision, to win the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organisation, International Boxing Federation and Ring Magazine World Lightweight titles, and his titles back home down under.

Lopez did knock Kambosos down in the tenth round, enabling Lopez to win 114-113 on the scorecard of Don Trella, overruled by judge Glenn Feldman who scored it 115-112, and judge Frank Lombardi who scored it 115-111 for Kambosos. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lopez, 16-1 with 12 knockouts, Jonesboro, Arkansas, might as well have fought at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for all the good it did them.

The bout featured virtually no holding. Kambosos fought backing up as the counterpuncher in center ring, and avoided the ropes and the corners. Lopez began throwing bombs and jabs. Kambosos countered and dropped Lopez, all in round one. While Lopez thrrew the harder shots, Kambosos had the volume and scored with more punches landed overall. Kambosos, confident, calm, cool and collected. Lopez was not throwing enough punches to win the majority of the rounds, allowed himself to get outworked by the Aussie challenger, and apparently had no “Plan B” once his power shots landed the consistency and power to do anything of consequence, save the right hand which dropped Kambosos in round ten. Lopez looked for the knockout at that point, but Kambosos, who got up, was not going anywhere. Both men were bloodied, but in the end, Kambosos wore a surprised Lopez down by bout’s end, who had not the technical skill to outwork Kambosos down the stretch. Lopez felt he won the bout. Two of the judges disagreed. Lopez believed after beating Vasyl Lomachenko he was the best at 135 pounds. Kambosos, after the first round played out, proved to be the better man. Loped felt he won.

Result: George Kambosos Jr. Win 12 Teofimo Lopez, Lightweights. Scoring: 115-111, 115-112 Kambosos. 114-113 Lopez. Referee: Harvey Dock. Kambosos wins WBA, WBO, IBF and Ring Magazine World Lightweight titles. Lopez down in first round, Kambosos down in tenth round. In recent memory, champions Mikey Garcia, Julian Williams, Manny Pacquiao, and Teofimo Lopez lost their world titles during the Coronavirus pandemic. In the case of Lopez versus Kambosos, Lopez allowed the trash talk of Kambosos to get to him, as he went public with it and vowed revenge. Trash talk is okay to sell tickets and pay-preview, but when emotions let loose, it is a subconscious trap, and Lopez’ ego fell for it.
