Ian Green Upsets 19-0 Tyler Howard on Vegas Card

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (November 6th, 2021)– In the Real Combat Media Upset of the Month for November 2021, on Friday, November 5, 2021, rising middleweight prospect Ian “Young General” Green, 15-2 with eleven knockouts, Haledon, New Jersey, scored an eight-round decision upset over previously undefeated Tyler “Hercules” Howard, now 19-1 with eleven knockouts, Crossville, Tennessee at Virgin Hotels, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Green slipped punches masterfully, moving side to side with fantastic agility, flicking his left jab in Howard’s face out of distance range. Green had a height and reach advantage at 6″0″ and 75-inch reach to Howard’s 5’9″ and 70-inch reach, and used it to full advantage. Howard came forward, but could not get inside, for the most part, getting held by Green whenever he tried unsuccessfully to get inside. Howard had a few good give and take jab exchanges, but overall Howard could not overcome Green’s size reach, and hand speed advantage and foot speed to remain out of distance range.

Howard won one or two of the rounds in the center of the ring head and body shot telephone booth exchanges, but this did not step the tempo of the fight. If you are Rocky Marciano, a fighter of this style has to get inside and wage war while cutting off the ring. Rocky was the best all-time at this. However, other shorter fighters of similar proportions, but without the technical ability and power of Marciano, wind up unable to chase the Muhammad Ali stick and move of taller boxers with superior reach. One judge gave Green every round over the 19-0 Howard.

Historically, fight fans remember when Randall “Tex” Cobb went 15 rounds with the then 40-0 Larry Holmes in November 1982 for Holmes’ World Boxing Council World Heavyweight title. Cobb, who went undefeated in his last 20 pro bouts, one only one round on the scorecard of judge Chuck Hassett against Holmes. Against a superior technical fighter with a superior jab, even the best of disciplined and well-trained boxers will be reduced to survival only club fighter status when they cannot avoid punches, get in range to land anything, or win rounds. It’s just the way it is, and often undefeated records get exposed that way. Even when Cobb and Holmes both stood 6’3″, the technical abilities of Holmes exposed Cobb, who also lost 10 round decisions to Michael Dokes, Ken Norton, James Buster Douglas, and Eddie Gregg for the same reasons.
