Weekend Roundup: Joyce Wins, Paros Wins, Bunch and Sawada Both Draw

Last Saturday’s super welterweight title unification draw between Jermell Charlo and Brian Carlos Castano over 12 rounds provided a hint as to how difficult scoring can be in high stakes matches. The following Friday to Monday, July 23 top July 26, 2021, two more draws emerged from the fog in high stakes battles.

Welterweight prospect Shinard Bunch, 15-1-1 with 13 knockouts, Trenton, New Jersey, settled for a controversial draw with Janelson Figueroa Bocachica, 17-0-1 with eleven knockouts, Detroit, Michigan, at Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. One judge had it 97-93 Bunch. Another judge had it 95-95 a draw. Another judge had it 96-94 for Bocachica. The cards went three different ways. On the same card, David McWater super middleweight prospect Isaiah Steen, 16-0 with 12 knockouts, Cleveland, Ohio, won a 10 round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Kalvin Henderson, 14-1-1 with 10 knockouts, Fayetteville, Arkansas, by way of Texas.




Bantamweight Kyosuke Sawada, 14-2-2 with six knockouts, Tokyo, Japan, settled for a second round technical draw with Ikuro Sadatsune, 11-4-4 with four knockouts, Atsugi, Japan, in what was a scheduled ten rounder for the Japanese Bantamweight title, at Korakuen Hall Arena, Tokyo, Japan.

At Wembley Arena in London, Commonwealth British Empire Heavyweight champion Joe Joyce, 13-0 with 12 knockouts, Putney, London, United Kingdom, put himself in position for an elimination bout with former number one heavyweight contender Luis “King Kong” Ortiz of Cuba with a seventh round stoppage of game Carlos Takam, 39-6-1 with 28 knockouts, Henderson, Nevada, by way of Cameroon. Takam protested the stoppage, claiming he was trying to get Joyce to punch himself out. 15-0 welterweight Ekow Essuman of Nottingham, United Kingdom by way of Botswana, won the BBBof B British and the Commonwealth British Empire Welterweight title on the undercard, scoring an eighth round stoppage of Chris Jenkins, 22-4-3 with eight knockouts, Garnant, Wales, United Kingdom. Jenkins suffered a broken rib in the second round, and it was all downhill from there.

Australian southpaw super lightweight Liam Paro, 21-0 with 13 knockouts, Brisbane, Australia, retained the International Boxing Federation International and World Boxing Organisation Global Super Lightweight titles with a 10 round decision over southpaw Steve Gago, 12-2 with five knockouts, Perth, Australia. At Eaton Hills Hotel in Eaton Hills, Australia, scores of 99-90, 99-90 and 100-89 for Paro indicate he is worthy of better opposition. 13-2 super welterweight Tysinn Best of Mackay, Australia, won the vacant Australasian National Boxing Federation Australasian Super Welterweight title with a 10 round decision over 13-4-2 Adrian Rodriguez of Brisbane, Australia.

French southpaw super lightweight prospect Bastien Ballesta, 23-1-1 with four knockouts, Beziers, France, won the World Boxing Council Francophone Super Lightweight title with a sixth round stoppage of Hedi Simmani, 33-7-1 with 17 knockouts, Lichervelde, Belgium by way of Tunisia, at Municipal Arena, Boujan-sur-Lebron, France.

At Hydro-Tech Eisarena in Konigsbrunn, Germany, World Boxing Council World Female Minimumweight champion Tina Rupprecht retained her title, 11-0-1 with three knockouts, Augsburg, Germany, retained her WBC Female title with a 10 round split decision over Katia Gutierrez, 23-8 with six knockouts, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Scoring was 97-93, 96-94 for Rupprecht, and 96-94 for Gutierrez.

At Arenas du Cap d’Agde, Herault, France, top 50 featherweight Florian Montiels, 21-2-2 with four knockouts, Agde, Herault, France, won the vacant World Boxing Council Francophone super Featherweight title with a 10 round unanimous decision win over 8-8-3 Carlos Stephan Cossio of Lima, Peru. Montiels if a former WBC Featherweight Francophone titleholder moving up in weight.
