Kiev, Ukraine (October 25th, 2020)– Former World Heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kiev, Ukraine, has tested positive for Covid-19 Novel Coronavirus on October 23, 2020, Saturday, the day before he is up for reelection in the capital city. Kitschko last fought in September 2012. Known as Dr. Ironfist, between 1996 and 2012, Vitali compiled a professional record of 45-2 with 41 knockouts, and helld the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization World Heavyweight titles, holding the European Heavyweight title, and fighting in 17 world heavyweight title bouts.  In 2010, Klitschko founded the Ukraine Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR). Dr. Klitschko has been the mayor of Kiev since 2014.

It appears Klitschko most likely contracted the coronavirus while visiting hospital wards where Kiev citizens were being treated for the disease, lending moral support, during his mayoral reelection campaign.

According to Klitschko, “Friends, the coronavirus crept in at the most inconvenient moment. Today I received a positive test result. A mayor’s work, during a pandemic of course, involves constant risk (including) communicating with people, (and) checking hospitals. In particular I regularly visited infectious disease wards where patients with COVID-19 are being treated. I tried to be careful (but) given the specifics of (my) work, I regularly did tests. Today unfortunately is disappointing. I feel good, but I have to go into self-isolation. I will work from home. Please do not ignore the rules. Do NOT ignore the threat! (of the coronavirus). Protect yourselves!”
