Meet Undefeated Iceland Heavyweight Prospect Gunnar Kolbeinn Kristinsson
By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent
Boxing has banned in the country of Iceland for almost 65 years. Iceland’s top boxing prospect is its only known professional boxer in history, who cannot practice his sport in his own country. His name is Gunnar Kolbeinn Kristinsson.
Rising heavyweight prospect Gunnar Kolbeinn Kristinsson, 11-0, five knockouts, Gardabaer, Iceland, is 31 years old and is still only a four rounds fighter. His quest to become the heavyweight champion of the world one day is quite a dream one which will if he ever gets the opportunity to fight for the title, will never happen in his native country, and will never be seen there either.
Iceland, a country of only 360 thousand people, does allow some form of amateur boxing, but has only four boxing gyms. Kristinsson fights in Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, and is now trained by Sugar Hill Steward, the current trainer of Tyson Fury. While no amateur professional boxing matches are taking place at the moment (due to the current coronavirus pandemic), Kristinsson has plenty of time for training and sparring now, and can only get better with time.
For an Icelandic heavyweight to fight and win even a six-round will be an extraordinary achievement. For what would a heavyweight prospect, who hopes one day to have a shot at the world heavyweight title, have left if you took away his dream? Gunnar Kolbeinn Krstinsson, the Icelandic Rocky Balboa, has a dream.
