Spike O’Sullivan Takes (35-0) Jaime Munguia on a Middleweight Trip to Hell

San Antonio, Texas(January 12th, 2020)– World Boxing Organization World Junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia, 35-0 with 28 knockouts, Tijuana, Mexico, moved up to middleweight and fringe contender Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan was supposed to be the easy ‘safe’ opponent. O’Sullivan, 30-4 with 21 knockouts, Cork, Ireland, almost played the part of spoiler at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on January 11, 2020, on a card presented by Golden Boy in conjunction with Zanfer Promotions and Murphy’s Boxing, streamed on DAZN, ending in a rough tumbler eleventh round stoppage win for Munguia.



 

O’Sullivan was given yet Another opportunity bout, and unlike his loss to David Lemieux, came in better prepared and tried to capitalize on the unexpected by taking Munguia on a rough ride to hell. Munguia is the harder hitter of the two combatants. O’Sullivan opted to trade, and in the third round almost shocked the world, landing a brutal right to the chin of Munguia which announced he was taking Munguia on a middleweight trip to hell.

 

Munguia wound up losing a point for throwing low blows in the sixth round during heavy exchanges. O’Sullivan went down in the seventh round, claiming a low blow again. Munguia had to be careful from this point on not to get disqualified. From the eighth round on, O’Sullivan took a pasting, and got cut above the left eye in the tenth round. The end came in the eleventh round when O’Sullivan got knocked down and remained on the canvas on all fours on a corner, as his corner threw in the towel and called an end to the scheduled 12 round contest.

 

This was Munguia’s second bout under ex-champion trainer Erik Morales.

Referee: Mark Calo-oy. Munguia was deducted a point for low blows in sixth round.
